Hey, it’s a non-crappy BOOK giveaway!
This time it is The Good Mother Myth: Redefining Motherhood to Fit Reality which is a collection of essays written by a diverse group of mothers that just came out this week. Check out all of the contributors. Pssst – I’m one of them!
Some of the essays are heartfelt and sincere and soul-wrenching. Some of them are funny. Some of them are confessions. Some of them have an agenda. Some of them will have you nodding and thinking, “thank goodness I’m not the only one who has had dark moments like that” and some of them will rub you in all the wrong ways. But that is why this book is great. It stretches your definition of ‘good mother’ and it makes you think.
Can a good mother smoke pot? How many times can a mother drop her child on his/her head and still be a good mother? What about a mother who struggles with depression? What about a mother who lives in a different state from her child? What about a mother who obsessively compares herself to another mother she once saw at Trader Joe’s? Just like that old spaghetti sauce commercial, it’s in there.
(PS – that last essay I mentioned that sounds annoying? The one about the obsessed mother comparing herself to someone at Trader Joe’s? That one is mine. I don’t think I actually specified that it was at Trader Joe’s in the essay so now you have, like, insider information and stuff.)
Get to the point! Here it is…
I was given two author copies and I’m giving one away! And it will be SIGNED. By me. Not by everyone. I’ll probably also draw a picture in it somewhere because I can. So there’s that.
This is shipping straight from me and I’m happy to ship anywhere in the world if you win.
Check out The Good Mother Myth: Redefining Motherhood to Fit Reality.

Yay! I’ve been looking forward to this coming out!
Exciting!
I’m 71 years old and have already raised my four kids, but I SO love revisiting it all through you! If I were to win this book, would it be okay to give it to my daughter-in-law of first-child four year old? She worries SO much!
I don’t see why not, but I’m not speaking for Amber.
I think passing on the gift of not obsessing is wonderful
Woah…Lisa, you knew about the new book? And you were first to post a comment. That’s two examples proving you’re really an Insider! Wait, are you one of the essay writers? (That would be cool – and I’ll bet a bunch of us are a wee bit envious.) Can’t wait to read the new book!
If you’re in, I’m in!
Fun!!
Looks like a good read!
Can’t wait to read it! 😀
Same here–it sounds really interesting!
Just bought a copy, it sounds like something that I’d really be interested in and even more so if you are in it!

I pretty much have to buy this now, just to read your essay. I’m also curious about the pot smoking one you mentioned, you sold me! 🙂
If I win will you post it to me in Scotland? 🙂
Oh, good question, yes, I’d be happy to ship it worldwide.
Sounds like fun!
OH, I’ve heard about this book! I didn’t know it came out already, thanks for the reminder about it and for the giveawy!
You are amazing, hilarious and I can’t get enuf of your blog (and book – read it 3 x already)! Big big fan and looking forward to 2014 full on new crappy adventures! lol! I have twins so a LOT of what you say rings true…. in double!

🙂
Sounds cool!
Just saw this in Parents magazine and was excited when I saw your name as a contributor. It’s on my Amazon wish list, but winning it would be much cooler.
Me too, me too! I saw your name in Parents magazine as one of the authors and I got so excited that I “knew” you! 🙂
Woo hoo! Excited to add another excellent book to my ever-growing list!
Cool, now I want to win to read the whole Trader Joe’s story!

Sounds great!
I’m really looking forward to reading this and um…a drawing too? Bazinga!
I just discovered that Facebook doesn’t give me all of your posts. Apparently, it thinks I don’t need all of your funny 🙁
Yeah, only about 10% of people who “like” FB pages actually SEE the posts now. Facebook changed things so that pages have to pay $ for everyone to see. It’s a bummer. Best way is to email subscribe which is over on the right hand column.
Yay! Thanks for the chance!
Either way, I am SO getting this book! 🙂
I’m just the kind of mother that would make you feel better about yourself. Can’t wait to read this.
Sounds like a fun book!
Just got the email about the book release 🙂 cant wait to read it.
I would love to read this book!
I would love to have a copy!
Looks like a great read!
I’m particularly interested in the “can someone with depression be a good mom” bit. I struggle with depression and while my husband and I both want kids, sometimes I wonder if it would be fair to our future spawn. :-/

I used to love to read, but finding the time is hard with two small children (I’m sure you know)! So I made a New Year’s resolution to read 12 books this year. I’d love to add this one to the list! Right after your book, of course. 🙂
Can’t wait to read it!
Yeah another awesome book to read that will make me feel like a normal mom

My wife and I both love your site. I got her your book for her birthday and it is hilarious. Thank you for bringing little bits of joy to our day.

I had a nosy with the ‘look inside’ option, and it already looks like a good read!
I would love to read this book. I moved to Tasmania nine months ago and have been “enjoying” the challenge of meeting mums at my son’s new school and trying to “fit in”! There’s nothing like the angst of wondering where you sit on the good mother scale… Sounds like a great read.
Looks like a good book. I need something fun to read!
I got your book for Christmas. This would be a great one to follow up with! 😀
Me, me, me!

Awesome, thanks for letting international readers be part of this 🙂
Sounds like my cup of tea!
I’d love to win a signed copy! I tried to do the twitter entry too, but it wouldn’t allow me to type my user name in the entry field 🙁 . I don’t know why. I am following you though, on both Facebook and Twitter. Here’s hoping I win, even without the extra entry. 🙂

This book sounds really good! (And I’m not just saying that because *you* are in it, though that certainly helps, as I’m such a big fan.) I also like that it’s lots of smaller pieces inside book…that’s exactly how I can fit in reading: in lots of small pieces. Thanks for doing this!

Almost, I said. Almost!

fun book!
Yay for a great new book to read!
Sounds great!
Sounds great!
As a teenager, I wanted to grow up to be like a mom I saw at a park for about two minutes. She just seemed to have it all together. Funny how we set standards for ourselves based on strangers.
Sounds like a great book.
This sounds interesting. I’d love to read it.
Sounds interesting! I’m curious about trader joe’s now….
As much as I’d love this book for myself I would pass it on to someone who I think needs to read it …. for many reasons.
I love your blog and can’t wait to read this book!! 🙂
Always a good thing to read another mom’s point of view. It has a way of showing you that no matter what you might think you are doing wrong, there are other moms out there with the same fears. We are good moms regardless of our “mistakes”.
Could be some fun reading… Mostly I’m just curious about your entry. And I want the sketch!
I really enjoy reading other parents’ thoughts!
I’d love to win!
Sounds like a great book!
Sounds great!
sounds intriguing!
I need this book.
Would love to read it.
Totally sweet book give away!
You were shopping at Trader Joe’s, which makes YOU awesome. Because they sell, like, organic cookies and stuff, right? I am not shopping at Trader Joe’s, so I’m jealous.
Would love to win a book for the new year!
I need this book. I feel like such a failure as a mom sometimes, then again who doesn’t?
I’m in
Sounds good!
I need to read this book! Looking forward to it.
Love this! Sounds very interesting, hope I win 🙂
Cool! I hope my library gets it if I don’t win!
Yes, I need to feel better as a parent and nothing helps with that more than reading about other parents with the same issues!
Looks like a good book!
I want to win!
ooh! would love to read another book by you.
Comparing yourself to another mother is the funniest thing to do to yourself! For all you know, she is probably doing to same thing with you and her own insecurities! Would love to read this book!
Sounds interesting. I’d like to hear what being a mom is like from other mothers.
Sounds like an interesting book! I’d love to win, and you can draw all over it. 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway!
I know a lot of moms who would enjoy this. Now only to find the time for them to read it!
looks like a great read 🙂
I would love to read this! What a great giveaway!
I’d love to win one just so I could have a signed front page with a drawing! I have your book & it was supposed to come with one of those first page sticker intro thing’s…but the sticker never came…
Looks like a good book.
Well, we don’t have trader joes in Canada, so that can’t be me you’re comparing yourself too :-). Can’t wait to see who it was
Can’t wait to read this book!
My thumb is sore from scrolling to the bottom so I could leave a comment so I could have more points to possibly win. I am a mother with depression – would love to read this!
Pick Me! Pick Me!

another book for me to read!
yay sounds so fun! If I win I’ll move this book to the top of my (much too large) to-read stack. 🙂
I could use a good laugh!! Can’t wait to read it
I was just reading yet another article about a mom who decided to never yell at her kids, and feeling annoyed bc while I think it’s fairly basic that not-yelling is way better than yelling, it’s also much less realistic given the depths of crazy our children often get to, so instead of feeling inspired, I just feel bad. This book feels very welcome right now!
Omg! I’d be so excited to get this! I have your book and would love this to add to the collection! If you vouche for these ladies than they have to be awesome just like you!! 🙂
I’m soon to be nursing a newborn and entertaining a toddler. This sounds like the perfect book.
Two of my favorite bloggers are in this book!
Always love “I Can, Because I Do!” It makes me happy to think and say it. There was hardly anything out there when I was a new mom except T. Berry Brazelton and Dr. Spock. Altho. my kids are now adults, I love to read parenting blogs like yours and welcome “The Good Mother Myth.” It’s so important for us all to know we’re not alone.
Love the idea of this book! Can’t wait to check it out.
This looks like something I definitely need to read.
Awesome! Would love to win this!!
Yay! Love your blog. I hope I win!
Whoa- over 4000 entries!? I bet you feel so popular on give-away days!
Ooh I’d love to win this! You always make me laugh !

Cool!
Yay! Love great book giveaways! 🙂
“Winning!”
-Charlie sheen.
Does quoting him make me a bad mother?
Want it!!
You are hilarious and I love reading your stuff.
Sounds like a good one!
35 years ago, I knew a young mom who vowed never to say” NO” to her baby daughter, because that word was ..ahem…. so negative. She wanted to avoid the whole screaming NO thing that was looming in the future when the kid would turn two.
Instead this thoughtful mother said, “Stop.” Stop was not negative, she reasoned. It was a helpful command that would keep her child safe. Right?
Guess what her child did with that?
Yeah….
“MOP!!!! MOP, MOMMA! MOPPPPPP!!”
I wonder how that kid turned out? (Probably just fine….)
Sounds great!
Sounds interesting. Hope those 2 copies reach new owners who will appreciate them 🙂
Sounds good!
I would love to win a copy of this book – what fun!!
This book sounds like a good read. Thanks for sharing one of your copies with your fans. We are going through Crappy book withdrawal after speed reading through your first book. =)
Can’t wait to read the book!
Want want want.
This mama hasn’t read much of anything actually, so a real tangible book sounds awesome!
I’d love to win!
would be a wonderful read to get an insight into the mind of the most important people in the world. mothers
While reading this post I couldn’t help but think about “mothers past”… did everyone (Grandma, Great Grandma, etc) feel like we do? Did they care? Or did they just go about their business, dropping babies on their heads and not giving a damn because nobody else gave a damn? I’m very interested in this book, if I don’t win I certainly hope my local library picks it up. I know I want to know how other mothers feel!
It’s on my wish list! But I’d love to win it. I never win these things!
Sounds like a great book! And the TJ’s story sounds funny!
I would love to win! The book sounds awesome.
sounds like a good read!
Sounds like a book I would love
This sounds so interesting! Obsessively comparing yourself to a mom you saw in Trader Joe’s? You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that I am not the only one who has done that. “What would TJMom do in this situation?” “I’ll bet TJMom wouldn’t have fed her child that McDonald’s hamburger.” “How does TJMom have it so together with three kids? I’m such a loser!”
would love to win and read this. thanks for the opportunity!
Super fun! Thank you!
Me! Me! Me! Please
I think we can all get caught up in the myth of a good mother. It would be nice to read some other mom’s experiences with it.
Can’t WAIT for your book! However, a signed copy WITH a picture drawn by you-Priceless!
I can’t wait to win!!! 😉
OMG I NEED THIS BOOK! I don’t just compare myself to ONE mother, I compare myself to every mother, in every store, in my neighborhood, at work, on tv, in books, in movies…you get the picture.
Fun! Sounds like a good one!
Love reading real mom books. Sounds like a good read.
This is a TOTALLY non-crappy giveaway and I can’t wait to read it! I just started up my blog (again) and this made me realize I can add you to my blogs-to-read list. BTW, I loved the Crappy Baby Running Away post! Every time my daughter wants to run away, I tell her that we will miss her too much and will never stop crying when she’s gone – at which point she tell me that we can go with her. Next time I’m going to make sure she wants to run away to somewhere with room service.
Wow. Didn’t think of ever get to the end of all those comments to leave a comment. Whew!
It sounds fascinating! I’ll have to see if I can pick this one up somewhere.
Seriously? Who has time to read with kids? Guess what will be the bedtime story choice if i (I mean WE) win? 😉
Sounds interesting. I don’t enter these sorts of contests very often. Love your blog – thanks for making me laugh.
Sweet. I’ve heard good things about this book.
This would be the first parenting book I own! Would love to start with such a winning collection!
Raised five, now gramma to five, would love to read this!
I like to read! For, like, 30-seconds in the bathroom before someone starts screaming for me.
A frequent topic in our household, would love to read it!
I can’t wait to read this book. Congrats Amber!!
Would love to read your annoying essay:)
Looks hilarious! 🙂
That was probably me at Trader Joe’s. Ha ha – just kidding. Sounds like a great anthology of True Stories from the Trenches!
So many of us compare ourselves to other moms – me included. I think we should all remember we play for the same team and should do as mush as we can to help each other at this crazy game called Motherhood!
“Mush as we can” ? LOL! I haven’t even been drinking!
Looking forward to a good read :0)
Can’t wait to read this whether I win or not!
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of this book….. good luck with the sales…..it looks like it will be a best seller!
I Would love to get a copy of this book! I struggle daily with thoughts of not being a good enough mother to my 2 year old twins – I work outside of the home and feel like I don’t spend enough time with them!! Would love a little reassurance and maybe a laugh or two! Thanks!
Sounds like a great read
Trader Joe’s and its high expectations!
Love your blog. Your insights never fail to crack me up.
I love your crappy pictures with all of my crappy heart!!
Would love to read it!
would love a copy, although i never win these things
This book sounds great. I can’t wait to read it!
Congrats on the book and thanks for the giveaway!
Blog Post Comment!

love your stuff! and apparently your comment has to be an original, haha
How bout moms who smoke cigarettes?
Sounds great!! I hope I win!! (If not, I’ll be buying it soon hopefully!)
This would be great!
This sounds like such a great read! I think we all need to be more honest about motherhood and any struggles we have – I think we’d all be happier!
Sounds like a cool concept for a book.
Just found your blog! Stoked! Would love to have a copy of the book <3
Fingers crossed!!
Love your blog! Thanks for sharing the book news- will keep an eye out for it in Canada! 🙂
The concept of this book made me think of the movie “Phoebe In Wonderland.” If you are close to any moms with special needs children, I strongly recommend it. We all have our flaws, but we do our very best to be good moms. Perfect is an impossibility. I’m excited to check out this book!
Oh awesome! Been looking forward to this book coming out since I found out another great blogger (birthingbeautifulideas.com) was a contributor as well. So cool!
You have the BEST giveaways. This book sounds like just what I need right now. I’m in motherhood rut or sorts :/ (but, aren’t we all..?) Thanks for the chance!
i would love to win this! I love this blog and I dont have any freinds who are moms, so i need the stories!

Thanks for giving us the opportunity! Being a “good mother” is hard!!
I’m always wondering if I’m a “good mother”. Best not to compare yourself to others, but it’s hard not to!
Looks like fun!
I love the crappy pics. lol
This is so exciting! I look forward to reading this book!
Sounds like a great book, would love to read it & share!

Selfishly commenting hoping to win a book. I love your blog, in fact it’s the only blog I love! 🙂
sounds amazing. I love real pictures of motherhood rather than the ones that have been played out to us for years.
Want this!!! Please 😛
Even though my kid is grown, I love reading the crappy adventures of a crappy family! I have younger friends that are now having babies and I ALWAYS send them here for some real world information.
I’m excited to read this!
Great giveaway!
I am a diamond mother so, of cours no Facebook no Twitter. And I am not sure what to do anyway to win 😉 or how it works.

So how many times CAN you bump your kid on the noggin (inadvertently of course) and still be a good mom? I need this book to know the answer!
I totally love your blog – normalises the insanity that is motherhood – can only imagine that this book would be as therapeutic!!
I’m mostly done raising my 3 but love everything you have to say!
Sounds Amazing!
I have 5 kids ages 6, 4, 4 1 and 1 – yep two sets of twins. I need all the help I can get.
Sounds like a good read!
This book sounds great!
Oh, I’d LOVE to win, sounds like a great book.
I’m very much looking forward to reading this (either a won copy or a library copy…which will probably get returned when my overdue amount is $12 or $13 as is my habit lol)! We put ourselves on such high pedestals that we end up knocking ourselves down when really ours is exactly the same height as everyone else’s! I felt TERRIBLE when I gave my kids canned sweet potatoes mixed with brown sugar, butter and chunks of turkey ham. Why? Cause the sweet potatoes were canned and the turkey ham was PRETTY processed. They didn’t die of it and in fact they loved it! Looking back it was not the lose/lose situation I thought it was. It’s funny the things we bat ourselves up about because it’s so hard to just believe in our abilities to be the parents our kids need us to be!
Sounds interesting. But now all I can think about is trader Joe’s chocolate. Mmmmmm.
I’m not even a mom and this book sounds awesome.
I think I want to become best friends with you. LOL
That Trader Joe’s, has it all together, dressed in jeans not sweats, hair done mom… she is annoying and imaginary.
This book sounds awesome!
Would love to read the book.
Sounds like a great collective book 🙂
Sounds like a great read!
This is so crappy! I mean cool. Kind of a crappy-cool. Anyway…I wanna win!

Sounds like a fun book!
What a great book idea, definitely would want to read 🙂
Can’t wait for this book!
You are so funny and I would adore reading about other “normal” moms. Though to be honest most of the reading will probably be done in the bathroom since that is the only time and place I can get any reading done!
Reading other mother’s stories really helps me when I’m feeling so inadequate myself. I know I’m a great mom, but sometimes, I don’t.
DBG
Thank you for the fun giveaway!
Sounds like a good book!
sounds like a great book!

after a month of interrupted sleep i could sure use this 🙂
Oh, I could definitely use some reassurance over here!!
would love to read this!
I like to know I’m not on a mom-island by myself. Also, on your TJ’s anecdote, I had a similar experience at Target, but not. When I was walking in, wearing workout clothes, wearing one baby and pushing another, I saw myself come out. Or someone who used to be me. She had great hair, dressed awesomely for her work day and had no smudges of anything anywhere on her person. And she was only carrying a person and 1 Target bag. It made me actually stop in front of the store and take a moment.
carrying a PURSE. not a person. One purse and 1 target bag. Geez. I can’t remember the last time I carried just a purse and any other bag.
This looks great!
Looks like an interesting book.
It’s an interesting conversation to have- what makes a good mother? I’ve had it with friends before and I’m sure it will come up again.

Hi – I’d love an autographed copy…..and can’t wait to read this book. I’m struggling with my own Good Mother Myths…..Thanks! p.s. It’s -11* in Wisco right now, -30* with the wind chill.
Oh this sounds great! I am not mom yet but probably will be soon and I would love to have this! Motherhood is so daunting and I can tell it’s rife with judgement and comparison so I could use some balance!
Well I’m in! also, just got my grocery tote today, omg I love it and honestly am trying to find a reason to go to the store tomorrow and use it lol.
I used to imagine drowning (a la Joy Luck Club)Imy colicky baby after 9 months of never sleeping more than 20 min at a time. This book is written for me!
