Non-Crappy Giveaway – Minimalist Mom

Crappy Pictures has sponsors. Sponsors do giveaways. The Minimalist Mom is doing a giveaway! Yay!

Rachel wrote a book, The Minimalist Mom’s Guide to Baby’s First Year - How to Save, Time, Money & Space.

You know what? Babies don’t actually come with stuff. But we all wind up with it somehow. Rachel will show you how to avoid being buried alive under baby gear that never gets used.

leaveroomforbaby

Don’t let this happen to you!

I sent Rachel a couple questions and she answered them and I’m just going to copy and paste some of it because she is too darn interesting.

Why did you write the Minimalist Mom’s Guide to Baby’s First Year?

“Boy did I waste a lot of money on baby stuff that I never used. It all sat in a closet, piled on top of each other, and none of it made my life easier.

This book was what I wish I had read when I was pregnant. It’s a book about slowing down when you have small children. It’s a book about how to live well with less so you can sleep more, pay off debt or find the dollars for those extra things like a cleaner when you’re infant is reverse cycling and you’ve had 11 hours sleep over four days.”

Have you always been a minimalist or was this something that developed over time?

“I was never a hoarder but I did love sales and stuff. Chances are if you complimented me on what I was wearing the first thing out my mouth was “I got if for 60% off!”

When my son was born things changed. I was at home a lot, stressed out by our stuff and finally saw that I wasn’t using everything that was stored in our closets.

In September of 2010, after a summer reading about minimalists that were living out of backpacks, I decided to massively downsize our possessions to get back more time, money and space. We also cut our living expenses in that year, selling our car, cutting bills and buying very little, so that I could stay home with our son. A huge benefit to this lifestyle change is that we paid off $82,000 in consumer debt in under two years.”

(Does anyone else have this sudden urge to declutter right now? Or is it just me? So inspiring!)

Rachel is giving away three copies of her digital e-book, Minimalist Mom’s Guide to Baby’s First Year today.

She is also giving away one Grand Prize of her book plus a Clutter Coaching Session.

Here is her description of the Clutter Coaching Session: “Tired of stuffed closets and junk drawers? Overwhelmed by piles of ancient bank statements and stressed out by your mud room? This is a chance for a fresh start.

Rachel will help you declutter three areas of your home and life. She will virtually hold your hand (and sometimes kick your butt) as you shred those statements and pare down your wardrobe.

You’ll receive tasks tailored to your specific needs that will help you banish clutter for good. Rachel will also be there for you with email support for the duration of the session and a maintenance plan to help you stay clutter free.

The session will last four weeks and can be started at any time between April and November of 2012. The value of this personalized four week clutter coaching session is $249.”

Yes please! Who doesn’t need some decluttering help? I really hope I win this one. Oh, I’m not eligible? Dang. My closets are crying now. They had hope for a moment. It always feels SO good to clear space, doesn’t it?

Good timing, I was just getting that spring cleaning itch.

  102. Michelle Wolfson says:

My husband woke up today and told me he had nightmares about our clutter! Please help.

  103. Julie says:

This author is preaching what I TRY to practice. Too late for the “Baby’s first year,” but I could use a clutter coaching session. I totally agree that you don’t need half the stuff “they” say you do.. in fact I got very little the second time I had a baby. I knew I could go get it when I needed it AFTER he was born, so that’s what I did.

“He likes room to wiggle. I’ll get a bouncy seat to put him in.”

“Oh now he wants to be held all the time! Time to sew a sling and check craigslist for carriers.”

Some folks swear by baby swings, but neither of my kids used one, ever. Not even sure getting a crib was worth it with kid # 1. But we’ve gotten plenty of use out of it with number 2, who likes his space and did not use the sling and carriers long at all… I’m glad I only spent about $12 total on carriers for him.

  104. Dena says:

Oh I so need to declutter and minimalise our life!

  105. renee says:

    decluttering definitely required here!

  106. Christina Medei says:

Oh Momma!!!! Need it doesnt even cover it!!!! Prior to my three wee ones I had the most organized and simplistic life! Fast forward eight years of marriage and babies… I had to forbid myself this summer from any yard sales or thrift stores until I can remove everything from this house we dont need. We bought this house with “3” bedrooms… I havent seen the third one since the day we moved in! And paper monsters, excessive amounts of laundry, and entirely too many toys have me secretly praying for a bulldozer! Where did it all come from??

  107. katherine says:

I was luckily too disorganized to have too much stuff prior to our son’s arrival, and it has worked great. we never decorated his room or anything, either.

BUT, I could really use that decluttering session!!

  108. Yes! I need to declutter before we move into our new house!

  109. nina sapir says:

my husbands motto is “better safe than thrown away”, please let us win!

  140. Sarah V says:

Old bills an bank statements, ahhhhh!

  141. Tanya says:

Uh, I don’t actually want to be entered in the contest — just had to say that isn’t it ironic to get a book about decluttering, or to pay a couple of hundred dollars to be told how to save money? If it needs doing, nobody else is going to do it for you.

…Having said this, I have just collected a carload of toddler stuff I probably don’t need from a friend who definitely didn’t need it, because, well, it’s free, right?! 😀

    • Rach says:

It is a giveaway, you don’t have to spend that money. And the book is an ebook, it won’t enter your home. Spreading hate only makes you dark and rotten inside.

      • allison laurie says:

they are giving away 1 to sell 1000, if you can’t see that you are blind to the truth. I love Ambers blog but fell it’s a shame she uses it to promote merchandise like this.

I think the only piece that I bought and never used that night was the pee pee tee pee. 278. Yon Ju says:

    Hi Amber and Rachel,

I am going to become a first-time godmother this June. The mom and dad would most benefit from your book. This will be their first child. They live in a crappy apartment, but unfortunately cannot afford to move out before their son is born. She is selling all of her jewelry to make ends meet. He works over 65 hours a week as a salaried manager.

Their small space is always suffering from lack of space and too much clutter. They can use all the help they can get. Please consider us for the grand prize. They do not have an ebook reader.

    Thank you,
    Yon Ju

We just found out that my husband and I are expecting another child and I was looking at this book when it was last mentioned on this site. We ended up with a lot of stuff we never used from our first child, so this hits close to home. Win or not, I think this is great!

  451. Tamar Dermer says:

well, it’s worth a shot. I homeschool my four children and I haven’t ruled out the possibility of another kid (hence the baby stuff kept in the garage). The doctors would “kill” me if I got pregnant again but who can resist those little faces? Additionally, we keep strictly kosher, by Jewish Orthodox standards. This means twice the amount of dishes, pots, pans, plates, silverware. Then there’s Passover, which is twice the amount again. Nonetheless, I try to reduce the amount of things we accumulate and regularly visit our local woman’s shelter to donate lots of stuff I feel we can live without. Still, I’m drowning. Is it possible? Maybe 🙂

So we are having to restock and I’d like to be a little wiser in my choices this time around 🙂

It’s not just “declutter” – but exploring why, how, and the mindset to truly not want to be like that again. An ongoing process! Still I need HELP!
