Parents Deserve Valentine’s Day Too

Valentine’s Day is so much different these days:

valentines-day-dating-married

Remember back in the pre-kid days? It was like Valentine’s Day everyday. Celebrating Valentine’s Day back then was redundant. We were just showing off.

I used to hope for expect flowers and chocolates and romantic surprises and baubles that sparkled.

Now all I hope for is that I can eat a chocolate or two before my kids descend upon them like rabid vultures. They take bites out of each one or poke their fingers into the bottoms to see what they all are and then put the coconut ones back.

coconut-candy

All I really want for Valentine’s Day is an unscathed piece of chocolate.

And not only do I have to fight for my chocolate freedom from my children, but the entire holiday has become focused on them.

What heart-shaped box of chocolates should I get my kids this year? What Valentine’s Day crafts can I do with my kids this year? How can I make Valentine’s Day special for my kids this year?

Is it like this in your house too?

Screw the kids. Let’s take Valentine’s Day back.

After all, couples who are parents need a day to focus just on each other.

Parents deserve to relax and have a nice dinner without the kids and have uninterrupted conversations too. We deserve to reconnect. To celebrate and rekindle the whole reason we got into this mess in the first place.

It is such a wonderful experience to go into a loud restaurant and have this conversation:

quiet-restaurant-crappy

I don’t want much. I don’t even require anything that sparkles. I just want to do something for US.

So this year, we’re revising our annual tradition of spicy Indian food and champagne at home. No kids allowed. Sure, we have to wait until they go to sleep, but then we can make the food as spicy as we want. Because that’s what matters. Spicy food. Us. What WE want. For just one holiday.

Screen Shot 2014-01-17 at 11.10.08 AMI was going to send chocolates to everyone. But my kids ate them all.

My husband’s working out of the country for an extended period, so I will celebrate Valentine’s Day like I always do when he’s away — buy myself some pretty pink carnations at the grocery store and then buy some candy hearts and chocolate for my son! And send a few cards to friends who will appreciate them since their spouses have passed on and they may not get anything else in the mail.

  2. Charlotte says:

Valentines Day definitely revolves around the kids at our house. Why do we feel the need to make something crafty for every holiday?! Would love to win something sparkly!

    • JS Mac says:

I blame Martha Stuart! She is the source of craftiness pressure.

      • Sanj says:

And kindergarten teachers. Lots of must-do craft projects arise from perky K teachers. (At least, that’s how it was in the 1980s when I was one.)
A K-inspired Valentine’s Day meal would feature origami napkins, handwoven heart- shaped placemats, and chocolate foods representing several cultures from around the world. And a leson in sharing, as in “Use your words, not your fists, please.” And, “I mean it.”
I’m old now, so I get to eat chocolate straight from the wrapper! And I can get spicy ones that artfully and simultaneously save endangered species. Cool!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Amber. Keep writing my favorite blog.

        • Kristen says:

Hear hear! We just got a list home from my sons class that has 29 kids and 11 teachers on it, and 11 of the kids and 7 of the adults arent even in my sons class, theyre in the special ed classroom next door. I understand why they did it but what kind of a bitch would i look like if we just sent treat bags for his class and nothing or just crappy cards for the other class. I realize im a jerk for groaning about having to put together substandard valentines because we have to make so freaking many.

  3. Sarah Bucior says:

And who isn’t excited about making 20 Valentine’s for the preschool class? Muahhhhhahahah

  4. Jill says:

Hubs and I are celebrating V Day a bit early this year by attending a party for two of our friends who are getting married after being together for 21 years. I’m also NOT and I repeat NOT making the same mistake as last year when I, and I alone, handmade 30+ doggie and kitty valentines for my DD’s classes. I’m taking the easy way out this year and being store bought cards for her class.

    • hay says:

I’ve made the same resolution. I tell myself I’m doing all the other class moms a favor by lowering the bar for competition. You and I are really just looking out for everyone else, Jill.

  5. Tiffany says:

Ha! I just buy my own chocolate, but good for you guys taking back the holiday.

  6. Ginger says:

Ah sweet memories of Valentine’s Day pre-child! Now we are lucky if we can sneak in a cuddle session with me working days, him working graveyard shifts, and a 2 and a half year old demanding attention. My only wish is that we can get to bed early that night (the toddler and I) and for my husband to have a great shift! 🙂

  7. Kelsey S. says:

Oh goodness. My husband and I haven’t even talked about Valentine’s Day this year. Last year was amazing, though. He surprised me with a babysitter and a dinner date to the fanciest place in town. I’m not expecting anything this year, but I wouldn’t complain if he wanted to do something like that again. 😉

  8. Sherilyn says:

What a great idea, you’ll start a revolution!

  9. sam-c says:

last year, when I had the time, I grumbled about trying to find valentine’s crafts on blogs in time to actually DO THEM. like, last year, all the crafty blog posts came up mere days before valentines. I made up some craft for my 4 year old to take homemade valentines to his preschool class for every kid.
this year, I have a new baby and no time. luckily I was thinking ahead and bought valentines last year when they were on super sale at target.
however, of course, this year, all the crafty valentine posts came up well ahead of time, like last week. oh well… I don’t have a lot of expectations for myself or anyone else.

    have a great spicy dinner!

    • mbaxtermomma says:

well organised mommy good thrifty idea hop e you get a big valentines bubble bath set and an hour to yourself in bathroom
      !!!!!

  10. Deckled Edges says:

We’re still expecting our first kid, but our Valentine’s Days never look very exciting. I’m guessing we’ll spend this one at home with a nice dinner. Chocolate is a requirement.

  11. JulieVK says:

Oh, we usually just exchange cards and let the kids eat lots of candy. Soo romantic.

  12. amy says:

It hadn’t even crossed my mind to think of something to do. That’s how long we’ve been married.

  13. Jo says:

I love love LOVE this jewelry!
My kiddos don’t start school till this coming fall. I intend to enjoy our last kid-centric Valentine’s Day as much as possible. No valentines cards, no mailbox out of a Kleenex box wrapped in red paper to make, no flowers or gifts. However, there will be much eating of chocolate!! 😀

  14. Sam M says:

My husband and I are actually going out of town for a long weekend without our 3-1/2 year old. WooHoo!

  15. Sandy says:

Love the picture! I routinely remind my husband that he IS expected to pick out a card for me on certain holidays.

  16. Christy says:

We’ll likely do what we do every year. Instead of going out on Valentine’s Day itself we usually go out another day close to so that we get to go out alone but we also don’t have to deal with the Valentine’s masses.

  17. LivLaughEat says:

Even before kids, my husband and I were just not the romantic type. This year it’s a long weekend for my husband and son so we planned a little weekend getaway to the beach before realizing it was Valentine’s weekend. It’ll be a treat for all of us so I’m good with that.

  18. Amanda B says:

Think we’ll try to follow your advice and put the kids down early and have a romantic dinner at home for Valentine’s Day!

  19. Karin says:

My husband and I hate crowded restaurants so we’ll have dinner at home. I pull out the wedding china (only time all year we use it) and a tablecloth, which my kids think is awesome. I taped “Warm Bodies” when we had free HBO a few weeks ago and we’re going to watch that while eating ice cream and hoping no one wakes up and begs for a bite.

  20. Heather T says:

If I’m not celebrating valentines day going into labor, then it will most likely be a normal Friday at home with our 2 year old. Which is okay with me 🙂

  21. Kristen H says:

I’ll be 37 weeks pregnant this Valentine’s day….so I guess I’ll celebrate by sleeping. But seriously, husband and I will probably share a romantic frozen pizza in front of the TV after our toddler goes to bed. hmmm….maybe I should rethink these plans.

  22. Christine says:

Here is a comment, which gets me some entries. Ba-dum dum.

  23. Melissa Dehne says:

We will be celebrating the big day as we do each year, a card and cookies with goofy sayings on them!

  24. We’ll probably wait to celebrate until after V-day, since hubs will be away for a job interview the actual day!

  25. Brittany says:

My husband decided we are going to do a “staycation” he got a hotel room, no kids and room service for 2 days?! Yes please 🙂

  26. Bridget says:

Wow. I am forwarding this post to my fav friends. Just fished our fab handmade preschool valentines, as the kids were off school because of the cold weather. Have a folder with other crafts to do…I need to take back this holiday. After 16 years, we deserve it. Thx for the kick in the arse.

  27. SJH says:

I ordered my husband’s Valentine’s gift today– a Shutterfly book of the 5 homes we’ve lived in since we got married <2 years ago. He'll love it!

  28. neal says:

We try to always watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on Valentines Day. So that we can remember what it’s like to truly give your heart to someone. (Hint: it’s messy)

  29. Robyn says:

We don’t even give to each other anymore. I buy candyfor the kids and then see who’s feeling nice enough that day to share with me!

  30. Jen says:

You are so right, we need to take vday back! I’m so in love with this starfish necklace: http://www.metalicious.com/item_63/Starfish-necklace-in-recycled-sterling-silver.htm Thanks for a great giveway!

  31. Nellie says:

My kids’ birthstones are ugly (well not ugly, just not very colorful)… stupid November and April.

  32. British American says:

My husband doesn’t like Valentine’s day and the fact that he is supposed to get me something just because of the date. I found him a 50¢ card at the dollar store that says “Cupid is Stupid. But you I like.” 🙂
I have bought our 3 kids the $1 heart shaped boxes of candy. Not sure about what to get hubby though!

  33. Cortney Croxen says:

We’re getting crazy this year. We’re having pizza delivered instead of getting take and bake. There’s even talk of renting a movie.

  34. Elizabeth says:

Valentine’s will probably end up being a family thing…but my birthday is 9 days later, and I don’t let the kids horn in on that!!

  35. Lena says:

My husband and I take the whole “It’s Valentine’s Day, pick me up a box of chocolates on your way home” to a new level. I insist that he wait until the day AFTER Valentine’s Day to pick me up a box of chocolates. 50% off!!! TWO boxes for the price of one. That’s true love.

  36. Enjoy your spicy dinner.

Love the yellow gold with sterling wheat rings.

  37. Our son is turning 2 on the 15th and my husband works on the 14th (the big V Day), so no celebrating for us. At least it was better than 2 years ago when I was pushing a baby out of my body. Oh wait, that was kind of good… you know what I mean. I would love to win this necklace, because it’s something JUST for me that I don’t have to share!!

  38. I couldn’t agree more about valentine’s day and that is saying something since hubby and I met on a blind date on Valentine’s day…Just bring home the chocolate

  39. Tessa Barrier says:

Does this mean we can skip the cards for everyone at school? Bc I haven’t even done it yet and I’m dreading it!! Def like v day to be about me and hubby 🙂

  40. Kbee says:

Wroght filigree in any shade for me, please. Even if it has coconut inside.

  41. Robyn says:

I keep telling my kids that I want chocolates. Loudly, so my husband overhears. We tend to lose the day with the shuffle. One of my boys have a birthday on the 15th.

  42. Marina says:

We usually just cook something special for US, after the kids go to bed. If we even remember! Lol. We can always just wait till our anniversary.

  43. Jen says:

Valentines Day? Oh, well the MIL is visiting. Great timing! *sigh*

    • Carrie says:

      Can’t she babysit? 😉

    • Elsie says:

We must have the same MIL! Mine always invites herself to come stay on Valentines day, my birthday and our Wedding Anniversary because she “misses her baby boy soooo much”.

  44. melia whyte says:

this year, for the first time in 6 yrs, we are ditching the 3+6yr old with gramma and heading to a nearby ish city for Zakk Wylde concert! most romantic date ever.

  45. Angela H says:

We’ll probably get a few treats from our favorite bakery (where we got the mini cakes from for our wedding) and have a glass of Rosa Regali after our daughter goes to bed.

  46. Reaya says:

Love this! We usually get a Valentine’s date night, but not ON Valentine’s Day. Plus my daughter’s birthday is a week later, so all attention is of course focused on just her for a month!

And I love the necklace. Have been looking for something similar for a while now!

  47. Jen R says:

Valentine’s Day also happens to be the anniversary of our first date…17 years ago. Now that we have a baby, we will probably celebrate it by eating takeout and drinking beer at home after the wee one goes to sleep for the night though we are toying with the idea of shipping her off to the grandparents’ house!

  48. Allegra Glynn says:

I had to laugh at the coconut part because that seems pretty typical of kids. You should totally make something chocolate-y with coconut oil because then they won’t eat it. 😉 Last night I made delicious brownies with coconut oil. It has a slight and I mean very slight, hint of coconut, but it just might be enough to deter your kids. We are spending our Valentine’s Day by driving with our 2 kids 6 hours to be halfway to WI to visit our family.

  49. Olivia says:

Ha. My husband will probably forget (as usual), the difference is that with three kids under 4, I’ll probably forget too.

  50. Heather says:

We will spend Valentines day at home with our precious sweetheart, 3 month old baby girl. <3

  51. Jeeva says:

cant remember the last time I received something for valentines day..this year I am going to buy myself a box of finest chocolates Costco has to offer and hide in a closet and eat them all :)>)

  52. Amber says:

Truth! We never celebrate valentine’s day anymore. Should probably do something about that…

  53. Liz S says:

Valentine’s Day? Our kids’ birthdays are 2/4 & 2/12. Heh!

  54. Kate says:

    Yuck–anything but the coconut ones!

  55. Mary D says:

We’re actually going on a REAL date this Valentine’s day!! A friend of mine and I agreed to swap babysitting. 😀 Perfect! A new sushi restaurant opened here, and it’s a perfect opportunity to check it out. Thanks for the giveaway! Good luck to all who enter.

  56. Valerie says:

We are going on a baby moon the day after valentines day! Thanks to some sweet friends and inlaws helping with the boys this will be our first night away in 4 1/2 years!

  57. miraz says:

Well, this year I’m trying to eliminate all processed foods from our diet along with meats and dairy so I can’t eat any boxed chocolates even though my kids will happily let me. My 6 yo will be more than happy to share her share too if I asked.

And in the 13 years we’ve been married, hubby has yet to buy me a sparkly bauble. I don’t care for glitter. Gadgets and geeky stuff on the other hand make me weak in my knees!

  58. Robin says:

Gosh, Valentine’s Day! We haven’t done much since my son was born. This year would probably be a good idea to fix that! Thanks for the fun giveaway.

  59. Veronica says:

I agree to the coconut ones. Yuck. I just want to say, thank you so much for your blog. It makes me laugh and smile and puts a comical spin on a difficult (albeit totally awesome) job. Thank you!!

  60. Tamara H. says:

Oooh, I’ve been wanting birthstone jewelry for a while! We have pink, purple, white and blue stones; it would be so pretty! Thanks for the giveaway!!

    • Tamara H. says:

Oh, in case it’s not clear, my favorite piece from her site is the birthstone necklace! I also really like the peacock blue Druzy necklace and the London blue topaz filigree necklace.

  61. MandyPandy says:

    It’s the same here lol

  62. Lauren says:

You’re so funny! My husband always tells me to text him to remind him…so romantic lol

  63. Allison says:

Love this! We usually have non eventful Valentine’s Day at home, too.

  64. Carol says:

Love your blog and especially your drawings! Yes you do deserve chocolates all your own. Hope your late romantic dinner is special!

  65. Marisa Haas says:

A valentine date after the kid goes to bed sounds perfect 🙂 and hopefully there will be chocolate!!!

  66. Laura says:

Beautiful! I would love to take Valentine’s Day back but will probably end up making a special dinner for the kids instead. Maybe next year. *wistful sigh*

  67. Johanna Klein says:

we buck the whole system and celebrate a day later and get 50% off everything

  68. Allie B says:

    Love this and love Metalicious.

I’ve been coveting these tsavorite earrings on Etsy for awhile:
    https://www.etsy.com/listing/169363817/tsavorite-earrings-silver-infinity-hoop?ref=favs_view_1

  69. Katherine says:

I’m excited this year because I got my love a star trek themed gift! Now to think about the kids 😛

  70. Julie says:

We were promised grandparents who would babysit on days such as these. We’ve been duped. We’ll resume adult activities in 17 years and 1 month.

  71. Liz says:

Oh I hope I win this, please pick me! The stones for my kids would be blue, purple and green. How gorgeous would that be?

  72. Lauren says:

I would love to win!!! Haven’t even thought about valentines day yet! We are making homemade chocolates this year and that’s probably all we will do 🙂

  73. Sara B says:

I refuse to buy into the valentines day kids stuff. It is an adult holiday (ok, at least a teenage holiday) about romantic love. Not love for your kids, not love for your friends. Certainly not love for heart-shaped crafts, hideous red and pink everything, and enormous social pressure to hand out little Disney valentines to all your classmates.

  74. Benjamina says:

With five kids and a forgetful husband, I am lucky if a get a hastily made heart covered in glue because the teacher made them make one for me.

  75. Sarah W. says:

Spicy food, huh? That sounds really nice, espeically the part about waiting iuntil after the kids sleep. This is inspiring, I really do want to try to do something like this, and thanks for the giveaway, that necklace is stunning!

  76. christine says:

valentines is coming up already?? might just have to arrange a date away from the kiddos. it’s been a long time coming, anyway…. 🙂

  77. Jamie says:

Oh valentines day how I miss you! lol I’ve always had to share V-day even before kids. My sisters bday is that day and she’s always been resentful about it!

  78. Fran says:

My daughter will be five this Valentine’s Day, so yes it will all be about her.

  79. Nichole Crawford says:

I’m hoping for a similar scenario as you, a romantic dinner away from the kids. My husband is amazing with jewelry so he usually surprises me with something nice.

  80. Jennifer Crain says:

    Yes

  81. Uri says:

I love everything in the wrought collection, fab jewelry!

  82. Holly says:

I love your Valentines blog and that necklace!!!!

  83. Heather L says:

We always celebrate valentine’s day on February 20th. That is our anniversary. This year we will be together for 6 years! So we are going to a concert and going out to eat 🙂

  84. Jlynn says:

My daughters birthday is 2 days after Valentine’s Day and this year it means whoopie pies for school on Valentine’s day as her birthday is on a weekend. The next day will be her party with friends, then family time on Sunday. Turning into a long weekend about her….

  85. Corrine says:

Lol! For our first date night since #2 was born (she’s 18 months old!) we went to an Indian restaurant, for the same reason. (Us, of course. Well, and the spicy food.)

  86. Kristy says:

This year, my in-laws are watching the kids for the entire Saturday after Valentine’s Day and we’re going to lunch and the movies! I’m so excited!

  87. Rebecca says:

Not that we ever really celebrated Valentine’s Day, but we kind of screwed ourselves last year by having our baby on Feb. 13th. I’m thinking in the coming years it’s pretty much always going to be more about him!

  88. Andrea K says:

I got heart shaped ravioli at Costco. I don’t know how else we will be celebrating.

  89. Jessica says:

For years, my folks have gone to the card store and pick out cards and give them to each other. 🙂 As for hubby and me, it’s a low key day. I’d rather a small bouquet of mini-carnations every few months from the grocery store than him spending the big bucks on Valentine’s day. Hope everyone has a good day! 🙂

  90. Claire says:

Just had our 3rd child, making us crazy enough for 3, 3 and under…I think I will be lucky to ‘celebrate’ with an acknowledgemebt of the day…I.e.: February 14? Oh, that’s Valentine’s day! Followed by panic as to whether or not I got enough treats for the older kids’ classes.

  91. Kayla says:

I am also one that has to remind. Nothing romantic.

  92. Jackie says:

I would be content with a glass of wine and him handling the 3am wake up from our 3 month old!

  93. Jessica Harlow says:

I’ve been looking for a great birthstone bauble to wear for my kids! Thanks for the connection.

  94. Kristin w says:

Hoping for early bedtime and nice dinner with some wine!

  95. Jennifer Wong says:

Tip for you preschoolers…have your kid make ONE valentine card and then photocopy that masterpiece 20 more times!!

  96. Leala says:

I don’t know what my Valentines plans are yet this year!

  97. Tara says:

I have no idea what we are doing for V day!

  98. Abbey says:

We always go out to eat as a family. 🙂

  99. Lacey says:

Honestly, we’re probably just going to have kid-free dinner after bedtime and play video games together. It’s the little things in life 🙂

  100. Olivia says:

We’ve decided to skip Valentine’s day this year because our anniversary is two weeks before. So we say: let’s combine them… That’s life with a 3 year old.

  101. Lyra says:

Winning this might let my husband off the hook for the Mother’s Day gift he keeps forgetting to buy me.

  102. Kathy says:

It’s our first time getting a babysitter and going out for Valentine’s Day since our son was born! He is 2.5 years old. Looking forward to dinner our and live music afterward!

  103. Lissany says:

When I want uninterrupted chocolate time, I am not above hiding in the pantry. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again.

  104. angie nesper says:

I have 4 kids, my oldest is 8, and don’t think I’ve celebrated V-day for about 8 years! one year, we both forgot our anniversary the same year. V-day is just a drop in the bucket!

  105. Tina says:

My plan is to surprise my husband with a romantic dinner or at least desert. Maybe outside with soft lighting if weather Permits. Of course after the kids are asleep

  106. krysta says:

I will spending V-day at a UIL competition with my daughter. After that, who knows?
I am sure there will not be a sitter, and restaurants are too crowded on holidays. In a perfect world I would make a cute, fancy dinner for all of us. Yea…

  107. Monica says:

we are doing the “text me a reminder” thing this year…. not as a punishment but as we’re trying to make each day special and not just wait for these holidays 🙂 Gotta get that spark back.

  108. Jennifer says:

Frankly, I would settle for 5 minutes with coffee in which I did not have to settle an argument, investigate a loud, possibly stuff-breaking noise, or answer the neighbor’s question about which one of my children may have thrown snow in her heating unit. I’m not going to get that, by the way.

  109. Bronwen says:

Wow, reading all the comments about what people’s kids do! Valentine’s day here (New Zealand) is about the grown ups, and even then a lot of people don’t celebrate it.

My husband and I got married on the 7th of Feb (10 years this year!) so we celebrate that and not valentines day, but before we were married we did.

  110. sara says:

We’re leaving the kids with a sitter and going ice skating. Then dinner at our favorite deep dish pizza place that we never go to because it takes 45 minutes for them to make the pizza, and there is NO WAY we’d take the kids somewhere that we have to wait that long for food!

  111. Marlea says:

I like the wrought gem rings at metalicious. =)

  112. Susan says:

My firstborn decided to be born on Valentine’s Day-three weeks early. We had dinner plans that did not involve going to the hospital. Valentine’s Day has never been the same since…

  113. Ashley Reyes says:

Yeah, we’ve kind of given up on the things you expect when dating and the relationship is new too! I like your low-key approach!

  114. Brooke says:

As it has been for six years since children, we will be staying in for Chinese food….after the children go to bed.

  115. Leah says:

Our plans are to paint at Paint With a Twist on valentines night and then it’s out for sushi or fondu! No kids!! I’m so excited I dont know what to do with myself lol

  116. Dana says:

This is so true! But I think we’d be sitting in silence staring at each other because we wouldn’t know what to talk about. I also think that phones should be banned during the dinner.

  117. Guen says:

We usually do something corny, like have a heart-shaped pizza! And chocolate! lots of chocolate! :o)

  118. Dee says:

I love this idea! I forget what I was reading the other day that basically said, “Let’s leave children’s culture to the children.” And it’s true. If your kids decide they want to go balls-out for Valentine’s Day, that’s great! Leave them with some construction paper and let them have at it. I remember having years I was totally into it, and I remember having years I didn’t care. But, either way, my mom just left me to my own devices, and if I said I wanted to buy some valentines for the class, she bought them for me–that was about the extent of her involvement. Now, Christmas, Halloween, and birthdays….? Those holidays are so fun with kids. But three cheers for leaving some time for grown ups.

  119. Racheal says:

This made me literally LOL – glad I’m not alone!

  120. Laura says:

We always got a drug store stuffed animal and small box of chocolates from my dad. They were on the table at breakfast (he left before we did). I think doing something for the kids is nice, as long as it isn’t ALL of it! Still. You have to have some nights to yourself. Valentines day, monday.. whatever. A Day is a day. lol

  121. Amber Leahey says:

We will be celebrating our valentines day with a family dinner at home. I hope to make it a bit more fancy with some decorations, candlelight and a meal made from scratch. Hopefully my husband and I will be able to enjoy a drink after the kids go to bed 😉

  122. Gretchen says:

How am I celebrating Valentine’s Day? with my son. 🙂 He’s my sweetheart.

  123. Danielle says:

We have reservations at White Castle this year. A co-worker mentioned it and after I googled it and saw pics I knew our family just had to do such a ridiculous thing. They give away souvenir menus! Guess we have an odd sense of romance:-).

  124. Katie says:

Last year was our first Valentine’s with Baby and he was supposed to have his first sleepover with Grandma. One of the cousins went into the hospital though so we ended up spending the day as a fam and the hubby and I did Chinese takeout and wine after Baby went to bed (we did end up doing the sleepover a few days later and it was awful. I cried all night!). The Chinese food and wine was such a success though that we decided to make it our tradition. Our wedding anniversary is in March so we can get fancy then. I like getting to spend Valentine’s with both my sweeties (maybe in a few years I’ll feel differently). 🙂

  125. I have a 4 yo, 2 yo, and a 3 mo. A bag of Dove Dark would make me happy!

  126. Kari says:

I had asked my husband a few days ago what he wanted to do this year. Money is tight for us right now. He said “go out to dinner.” Not sure if that means *with* our 2-yr-old daughter or not… Last year’s dinner out with her was not a whole lot of fun. Maybe this year will be better?

  127. Katie says:

I’ve so been meaning to get something like this.

  128. Laura says:

Totally agree on this – we’re waiting until our son is in bed before splurging on sushi.

  129. Cori says:

Hmmmmm – haven’t made plans yet – and my husband and I might be in different cities if one of us goes to our son’s basketball tournament!

  130. Lynn says:

I never celebrate Valentine’s day because it is very close to my birthday and I have hideous emotional scars from getting heart-shaped cakes for about a billion of my childhood birthdays. I don’t even LIKE pink cake.

  131. Natalie says:

Last Valentines Day was our first since our son was born, we celebrated by taking him up the tallest building in the City to see the view and his present to us was sleeping through the whole thing – as it turns out, it was just what I wanted!! 🙂

  132. Lisa says:

My second daughter is due on valentines day. Is it wrong that a very large part of me is looking forward to being fed three times a day (plus snacks) and having my bed made? Sure it’s hospital food, and the linen tends to be a little scratchy, and there is that tiny issue of a newborn eating into my “holiday” nap time- yet I still feel like five nights away from my 2 1/2 year old and all the associated chores will be nothing short of delightful! Happy valentines day to all! Hope you are treated to nothing but the finest chocolate 😉

    • Amanda Havens says:

Five nights?! I just had boy #3 three weeks ago and they sent me home the next day. That’s standard policy for an uncomplicated birth here.

  133. Liz says:

I’ll take a pound box of See’s Dark Patties, but all I really want for Valentine’s Day is a 2 hour nap with no kids or cats jumping on my head.

  134. Stephanie S. says:

Our Valentine’s Day tradition is to eat chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese, peas and a bottle of wine! Super classy! 🙂

  135. Jayme says:

TRUTH! BC, my husband and I would take turns on valentines day planning intricate things – like kidnapping me from work one year, so we could spend the weekend at the beach. Complete with picnic and wine on. the. beach. Now, I call him on the way home from work, “Hey, can you pick up a pizza cause I have to stop and get you a card”. Because nothing less romantic than having to fight with the kids to get them to eat.

  136. Amber says:

I would like to say we’re doing something uber romantic, but the two of us, but then I would be lying! Haha we probably won’t even know until the day of 🙂 haha I love the necklace that’s part of the giveaway! It’s gorgeous!

  137. Mrs. P says:

I have two littles. I will spend my day trying to get my kids to go to bed thirty minutes early so I can spend those thirty minutes before I pass out watching Jeopardy with my husband.

  138. Leslie Meinzer says:

We are planning on going to Rodizio Grill our favorite place 🙂 and I’m hoping to go get some yummy French macaroons!

  139. Flatlander In Vermont says:

We celebrate our dating anniversary at the end of January instead of Valentines day. So we just had our kid free, just us time and boy was it long overdue!

  140. jennifer wang says:

Thanks to you and Metalicious for the givaway! My boys are the same age as yours, and with Valentines Day falling on a Friday this year, I was thinking this would be the year to actually have a date night without much care as to when the kids actually fall asleep. Alas, our older boy is testing the next morning to get into a local magnet school, our number one choice for school, so we’ll have a family-friendly dinner with early bedtime after all.

  141. Kimberly says:

My husband and I love going out of town on an overnight or weekend getaway. We live fairly close to a beautiful little coastal Oregon town surrounded by lush forests. Valentine’s day weekend is too expensive though, so we go before or after!

    • Amanda Havens says:

Isn’t the Oregon coast the best? I stayed in a house on the beach in Yahachts a while back. That was pretty much my favorite vacation place ever. It’s was beautiful!

  142. Amy says:

We’re probably not doing much, we’re closing on our first house on Monday so w are broke, lol.

  143. Emily says:

    Getting a BABYSITTER! WOOHOOOOOO!

  144. Ligia says:

After putting my 3 y and 1y old boys to bed my plan is to have a delicious home made diner a glass of Moscatto. If we are not tired we can cuddle and watch a movie together. Reality is dinner will be with the kids and I will drink wine so I will forget all about it. The movie…oh well…:/

  145. Melissa Russell says:

All of this talk about Valentine’s Day has just reminded me that it’s only 2 weeks away! No plans yet, but we usually end up at a Japanese Steakhouse with the kids. That way they are entertained by someone other than us during the meal 🙂

  146. Loud restaurants are even better than quiet ones for a date, because my husband and I revel in the fact that we’re not responsible for any of the yelling kids.

  147. Lauren says:

    I love the goddess earrings!

  148. Alexandra Koncewicz says:

My husband and I both have birthdays within a couple of days of Valentines Day so all three events end up getting lumped into one nice meal out and flowers etc. My husband loves it but I always feel like I’m getting cheated out of excuses to celebrate!

  149. Jen says:

Yes! and Here here! and AMEN!

I know so so many parents who celebrate Valentine’s Day as a family and even their WEDDING ANNIVERSARY is celebrated with the kids (they call it the anniversary of the start of their family).

I get to hang with my family every day. I love them. A lot. But, goodness–we married folks need something to celebrate!

    Also, I love that the sparkly give-a-way in this post is a birthstone necklace. That the winner will likely use to celebrate her kids. Because, it really is all about them. (;

  150. Erin C. says:

I hadn’t noticed how much kids have taken over V day until your post! Can they leave nothing sacred? Oh wait, I never liked it to begin with… But that’s no reason for the kids to benefit!

  151. Paula P says:

I keep hoping for the sparkly baubles, but I’m just as happy when a box of chocolate-covered strawberries shows up. Then I eat them inside the fridge so my daughter can’t see them! She always catches me though, and then I have to share. [sigh]

  152. Amanda Herman says:

First time commenting for a giveaway. We try and keep Vday for us. It is one of my fave holidays. We are visiting grandparents this year and asking them to watch 3yrold boy and 6wk old baby girl so we can go to dinner.

  153. Kristan says:

Haha I always have to buy my own chocolate! Were going to dinner for Valentine’s Day.

  154. Melody says:

    Pretty!!!

  155. shannon says:

I love jewelry! This is so pretty!

  156. Carli says:

    So thoughtful!

  157. Janel says:

No plans yet but getting some ideas from all these comments!

  158. hetha2001 says:

love the engagement ring sets! wow.

  159. Julie says:

We usually celebrate on a night that’s not the 14th…easier to get a babysitter and a table.

  160. Mary says:

We dont have plans. My husband asked if I wanted to go out but everywhere is always so full. Maybe we’ll snuggle on the couch after my daughter is asleep.

  161. Thank you so much for always giving the humorous side of parenting. I’m with ya about the chocolates and spicy food. Thanks for helping get the word out about my jewelry, you rock!

  162. Megan says:

we are going to dinner at Waffle House with Our 2 year old (at 5:30) – not exactly romantic, but it will be fun!

  163. Omg I loooooove metalicious! Everything rose gold! I’m also saving up for a blue topaz & silver wheat band ring

  164. Kim D. says:

I unfortunately am too practical for Valentine’s day. I bought myself some yarn this year. And felt guilty about it, of course, because I already have a lot of yarn. But it made me HAPPY, dang it! Beautiful jewelry, to boot. And I even have exactly four kids! I hope I win. 🙂

  165. Melanie says:

Yes, that’s exactly what I want for Valentine’s! Spicy food!! 🙂 Oh, and parents’ time without the kids (though that’s a little less realistic).

  166. Lexie says:

I don’t know how we’ll be spending it. Baby #2 is 9 months old now so it’s even harder than before to get out. Baby #1 is 3 yrs old and doesn’t know about valentine’s day yet. Perhaps I’ll wait another year to let him know about it. I suspect a card from the husband. And think champagne should definitely be involved. I’ll text him and let him know!

  167. Amanda says:

Valentines day? What’s that? Lol Love this post!

  168. Jenn says:

My husband and I now just go to the card store, look at the cards and show each other the card we would purchase for each other and call it a day. We save $7 and usually have fun while doing it. I used to laugh at my parents for doing this but as we can all agree, we often turn into our parents- and I am pretty excited by the example they set!

  169. Angie says:

We’re going to a charity dinner dance for http://wishuponawedding.org/ with a Gatsby theme.

  170. Shari says:

We will eat unscathed chocolate. And maybe Italian food.

  171. Mary says:

Metalicious makes the BEST, most personal jewelry you could hope for. I especially am loving the shark tooth necklaces. I love pairing them with pearls! Great crappygiveaway!

  172. Anna says:

My husband won’t even be in the same time zone as me for Valentine’s Day as he is a consultant and working in Kansas City. *sighs* Maybe I’ll treat myself to really good take-out?

  173. Amanda Havens says:

All I plan to do is some valentine-y food for the kids, probably heart shaped pancakes since that’s pretty easy. Also, one of my sons is turning 2 in a few days. I don’t plan to give him any presents. We’re probably just going to go to the park downtown for a ride on the carousel and to find a yummy treat. I figure, he just got a boatload of toys for Christmas and is too young to know the difference.
Does that make me a scrooge?

    • chelsea says:

No, I think it makes you a good mom! He knows it’s a special day either way, and a special day out with Mommy (before he’s older and too cool for that sort of thing) is priceless compared to stuff that will just get forgotten in 3 months anyway!

  174. Erica says:

    yay necklaces!!

  175. Erika says:

The fact that it falls on a Friday this year makes it much easier for us to take it back! Thanks for the inspiration.

  176. Karen says:

Last year I organised for us to go down the Gold Coast for the night (we’re in Australia). I was 6 months pregnant with our 2nd and our 1st came with us. We didn’t even get a chance to bump uglies while we were there. Sigh.

  177. K says:

I can’t remember the last time I got something sparkly! Would love this!

  178. Amy says:

Amber, you’ve been spying on my house again , haven’t you??? I laughed so hard at the picture of you reminding your husband to buy chocolate. I do the.exact.same.thing!

  179. Mandy P says:

I really like their LONDON BLUE TOPAZ SILVER NECKLACE – SOMETHING BLUE. But really they have amazing stuff!

  180. Theresa Carroll says:

I remember the days of making sushi or lobster at home for valentines day. That’s a bit pricey for the little ones, considering their premium dinner usually includes bagel bites 🙂

  181. Sarah says:

I’m spending Valentine’s Day with my Hubby and 3 rugrats. It’s funny how you always look forward to romantic dates on Valentine’s Day until you have kids. After we did I look forward to giving little Valentine’s gifts to my ones and Hubby!

  182. Jeanette says:

Valentines Day definitely revolves around our daughter. Our anniversary is on the 28th though so we celebrate then. She can have Valentine Day :D.

  183. Cassandra says:

I want to make some sugar peonies for my show cake this year and I was sad that all the cutters, veiners, wires, and do dads would cost me like 60 bucks…just so I can make one flower. I was lamenting about this to my husband who got up to look at the calendar. He wanted to know what day Valentine’s day on. This is funny and sweet. Sweet because he was thinking instead of buying me a flower this year, he could buy me a gum paste peony cutter. Very sweet. Funny because he really wanted to know what day of the month it was on. He apparently has always looked at the calendar and never realized that it is always the 14th each February. 🙂

  184. Amanda L says:

Because my son is undergoing some medical treatments that make it too risky to leave him with the babysitters near my house, we will likely spend Valentine’s day having dinner with the kids and maybe a movie when they go to bed? I will probably make mac n cheese for the boys and something adult just for us parents. 🙂

  185. Meredith says:

Of the stuff on their site – I actually like the prize jewelry (wrought birthstone) best! Because it’s simple, but it glitters.

Valentine’s Day is going to be just another day at my house – probably counting our preschooler’s Valentines <3 But, our anniversary is 2 weeks prior so we get our night out then 🙂

  186. Megan B says:

One year we got a babysitter the Saturday after Vday, went to a movie and scored some clearance Vday chocolate. We’ve already mutually agreed to ignore it this year. Though random jewelry will not be snubbed.

  187. Davide says:

    Oooh. Purty.

  188. AmberK says:

I honestly have no idea what we’ll do for Valentine’s Day. But I do know that sometime soon (either for Valentine’s Day or my birthday) hubs & I are planning a weekend getaway. I seriously can’t wait.

  189. Sara says:

Hadn’t thought about it but this is a good idea! Though restaurants are a pain so maybe we will go for a walk alone and talk! Cheap date

  190. Chelsea says:

I doubt we will do anything, but your kids are free to give me all their unwanted coconut candy – a little poking never hurt anything ;). Those are my favorite.

  191. Theresa Carroll says:

Also, I used to do the same thing to my mom’s candy. That woman never had a piece of chocolate that didn’t have a thumbprint the entire time I lived in the house, and I thought I was doing her a favor by leaving the coconut ones because she likes them!

  192. Katie says:

Great idea! Will start thinking of a small way to take back Valentine’s day…

  193. Sara says:

we never really do anything for Valentines Day.. maybe pick up some dinner but that’s about it

  194. Stephanie says:

We actually don’t celebrate, but then we do take regular date days throughout the year.

  195. Rachel says:

We always stay in on Valentine’s Day — usually make nice steaks and elaborate {read doesn’t come out of a box and takes more than 10 minutes to make!} sides. This is our first Valentine’s Day as parents, so it will be probably eat after we put Little Miss to bed {and maybe the sides will come out of a box!} 🙂

  196. Becky says:

My son’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day! We will never again have it be about us. And I feel so bad for him because once he starts dating/gets married/has kids his birthday will not be about him!

  197. Jenni says:

I gave up on hoping for a box of chocolates a long time ago. My husband thinks eating candy is morally wrong so he would never buy it for me. And his judgmental stares take all the enjoyment out of it, so now I buy my own chocolates and hide them and eat them in secret. At least my kids don’t get into them that way though!

But when someone brought us a box of chocolates at Christmas, I cut all the pieces in half so they could see what was in them w/o having to take a bite!

  198. Kate W. says:

We always get a heart-shaped pizza and eat it after our 3yo daughter goes to bed.

  199. My husband and I have an almost 2 year old and a 3 month old. So I’m guessing Valentine’s Day will be focused on them! 🙂

  200. Rachel says:

Us time + chocolate = perfect Valentine’s Day

  201. Sarah says:

I’m with you! Stay in and pig out kid free. Guess what!? Bedtime is 7pm tonight kids! And what’s with all the kids’ valentines coming with candy? I survived Halloween just to have more valentines candy brought in the house!

  202. jamie says:

    What’s valentine’s day? I didn’t know it existed anymore…….

  203. Laura says:

gifts for the twins- new cups and underwear. Wine for us!

  204. Audrey P says:

I love sparkly things! My (pre-kid) husband used to be the BEST sparkly gift giver! It made everyone jealous (including the now post-kid ME). But I wouldn’t trade the little stinkers in for anything – unless its something that REALLY sparkles… no, wait, probably not even that. 😉 Here’s to eating chocolates in a dark pantry while the kids watch TV! Happy V-day! lol

  205. Suzanne says:

If I can even get my husband to acknowledge V- day it will be a romantic day 😉

  206. Anina Duren says:

With three kids under 5 I do not predict anything special will happen this year! Probably watching TV together on the couch 🙂

  207. Laura B. says:

Every year we go out the day of Valentine’s day no matter if it’s a Monday or a Friday or whatever day of the week. Just the two of us. A dinner out. Uninterrupted.
We have three children (6, 4 and 2) and a 4th on the way so dinners out together where we can talk are priceless!

  208. Sara M says:

Honestly…. I kind of hadn’t thought about Valentine’s Day. At all.
Ooh, but that Moonstone infinity swirl ring is GORGEOUS.

  209. Emily Greenberg says:

We have never made a big deal out the day. Its just never mattered to me for some reason. I probably will get my kids a little something when they are older but at 3 years old and 8 months old they don’t care either 🙂
    AMAZING giveaway! Fingers are crossed!

  210. Suzy says:

My poor husband. My birthday is the 12th and then Valentines 2 days later. And no ideas left over after Christmas. Last year he did the best: Gave me money and took a day off work to stay home with the kids while I went out. It was the best. I hope he does it again. 🙂

  211. Pam Zercher says:

You know I hate? Married people WITHOUT kids who say they’re having “a date night.” EVERY NIGHT is date without kids!!! Craziness. (Love your blog!)

  212. Samantha G says:

I will probably go to bed early on Valentine’s Day 🙂 and I love the blue topaz bezel set wrought earrings from Metalicious!

  213. Chrissy says:

I love the boxed assorted chocolates.

  214. Lauren says:

“Screw the kids. Let’s take Valentine’s Day back.”
Yes! This! Thank you! We should make buttons!
Kids have the corner on every other holiday. They can’t even appreciate this one! It’s ours again. I’m in!

  215. Annie says:

I found you through Pocketful of Joules, and I’m so glad I did! I love today’s Valentine’s day post–my thoughts exactly! Now to get that 5 year old in her bed and staying there all night for once. Mama needs some “spice!”

  216. mb says:

This year we’ll probably do… nothing. Last year we did… nothing. The year before I got flowers and dinner. I was pregnant with our first child that year. Go figure. 🙂

  217. Katie says:

My child is very picky- so I just buy sweets that she doesn’t like for us grown ups!!! And ok I guess I can get the kid something too… 😉

  218. Kara says:

Our church is offering free babysitting this year! Woot! So the big kids will go there, the baby will go to bed early, and hubby and I will have a quiet, relaxing dinner. Or that’s the plan anyway. One never knows…

  219. Tina says:

we will probably go out for a lunch or brunch on Thursday morning as both kids are in school that day! no sitter required.

  220. Lisa says:

OMG – spicy food. We both love spicy food, mainly because salt and pepper were spices growing up. Tired of making supper, taking out some of it out for the boy, then adding the spice – and hoping he doesn’t ask for more. Because, you’re getting an apple.

  221. Jenifer Y. says:

My husband and I are planning to go on a dinner and movie date on Thursday since he works Friday and the weekends. While on Vday I get to spend it with my 2 boys. We usually secretly eat chocolates while daddy is working. Lol..

  222. Stacy Hill says:

    Ahh to have time alone!

  223. Kelly Clark says:

babysitting for a friend since my hubby will be at junior high camp 😉

  224. Julie W. says:

We’re planning to get a sitter, but a few days after the 14th — that’s when all the babysitters are available & the chocolate is on sale! 🙂

  225. Sparki says:

It’s so funny how the meaning of Valentine’s Day changes as you age! As a kid it’s about giving and getting valentines. Then it’s about what guy can be how sweet. Then it’s pressure on the husband, better surprise the wifey with something sweet! And then eventually it’s about other people again. Cycle of life…

  226. Christina S says:

We might trade babysitting with a couple friends… We’ll watch their daughter one night and they’ll watch our boys another. Or maybe we’ll order in and eat chocolate covered strawberries.

  227. Kelli says:

Stayin up late (past 9pm), sitting in the hot tub and having a nice conversation!

  228. Mindi Limbaugh says:

I HATE Vday. But…this year, dude #3 is due! Hopefully he will come before that, so I have a GREAT excuse to not do crap. Except eat exorbitant amounts of chocolate truffles. Or choc covered strawberries. Gotta be healthy with breastfeeding I guess 😉

  229. TC says:

My husband and I can’t afford dates right now, and family meals are important to us. But every Sunday night, the girls get Annie’s Mac & Cheese for dinner and we have a date dinner after they go to bed. Most weeks it’s REALLY spicy 🙂

  230. chelsea says:

My hubby is pretty good at birthdays and christmas, but I will be entering the third trimester with our second after putting our 18 month old to bed, so I think the best I could ask for is for him to do the dishes and remember to look for a nice card before the 12th! Oyr favourite was the year we were still in uni, and had a movie binge with pizza and corona instead of futzing about with all the going out preparation and crowds.

  231. Velvet says:

We don’t celebrate valentines day, we celebrate Pi Day instead. Not sure what we are dong yet….

  232. Terri Dube says:

Valentines Day in our house involves our whole family as well. We typically make heart shaped foods and the kids enjoy exchanging hand-made valentines. It’s fun – 17 years together – 4 kids later and we cherish every single wild and crazy moment…but then again, don’t we all? Love your blog!

  233. Beth says:

Maybe we’ll go to dinner sans kids…just not on the 14th. Too crazy that night…

  234. Aimee says:

Same as every night…dinner after the kids go to bed
& an order that if flowers are bought on that day he will be yelled at (since they cost a zillion times more)

  235. Laura M. says:

I’ve been looking at various V-Day crafts all month for me to do with/for the kids. LOL. You’re right, why do we do this to ourselves?!? The necklace is gorgeous! Thank you for a chance.

  236. Karina says:

Ha i just found a v-day card that fits this post’s sentiment exactly

  237. Pamela says:

So excited about the giveaway. Everything is lovely but those rings are really sharp!

  238. Mel Rogers says:

Wow this is my first time commenting and there are lots of comments yaay!!

For all Valentines Day “hallmark holiday” – the husbo and I still go to the same restaurant (much to his disappointment) every single year to have a nice meal together.

BUT this year we decided to mix it up a bit and invited another couple to join us at the traditional restaurant. Yes we are going on a double date on Valentines Day…coz why not 🙂

  239. Jenn says:

Loving that necklace!!! And chocolates. And spicy Indian food.

  240. corinne a. says:

No idea how we’re celebrating – or if! Our 3rd baby is coming March 5th, and both my husband and I are students and employees – so anything remotely relaxing would be just fine by me!

  241. Beth says:

We will be celebrating by going out to dinner before baby #3 joins us next month! Of course we know there won’t be any going out for a long time after that!

  242. Maureen says:

Tip for having your chocolate unmolested: buy your own small box and hide it. It’s the only way.

  243. Jess says:

We will be packing to go away for Feb vacation the next day – BUT have penciled in a date night on our trip (grandparents sitting -YAY) to re-connect.

  244. Monique Hershfield says:

Celebrating V-Day with Sushi and coming home to new pillows on our bed <3

  245. Carrie Naff says:

What a wonderful a sweet giveaway!! Your posts make my day!!

  246. Nancy says:

I’ll be eating heart-shaped ravioli with the hubs and kids.

  247. ACsMama says:

I think I shall celebrate Valentines this year by taking a nap. A glorious, uninterrupted nap. At 11 weeks pregnant, all I want is sleep. Of course, some chocolate would be nice too. My Christmas freezer stash (the monkey doesn’t think to look there, so they are safe) is running low.

  248. Jen says:

I have always disliked the idea of Valentine’s Day for kids!

  249. Emily M. says:

We’re getting a babysitter, and I’m making a nice dinner at home! We might go out for dessert after!

  250. Natalie M says:

We usually make a nice family dinner, then watch a movie and eat junk food after the kids are out. 🙂

  251. Jennifer Nishizaki says:

Have a 2 year old and a hubby who works two jobs so probably doing very little!!

  252. Lisa says:

    I want a necklace for Valentine’s Day!

    Also: hilarious.

  253. Jenise Lindo says:

This year I’m hosting a Valentines Day party for 10 toddlers and their mommies. Yes, I’m crazy.

  254. Amanda says:

Everyone has been so ill at my house (me, my husband, my son) for the last month, I just want us all to be healthy for Valentine’s Day! (Is that asking too much? Maybe…)

  255. Michelle says:

How am I celebrating? By packing a family of 6 for a ski trip that leaves at 6 am the next day. hard to complain though when we get to ski, so there is that.

  256. Tracey says:

I do love sparkly things. My husband has NEVER been in town for valentines days.. I swear it’s planned!

  257. Sarah B says:

My husband is in the Navy, and on a ship. I’m not even sure he’ll be in port for Valentine’s day, but if he is he’s definitely on duty. We’ll probably go to dinner (with the kids because we don’t have a sitter here) the day after.

  258. This year, we’ll wait until the kids go to bed and then, very romantically, eat 15% – 35% of the candy they collected at school.

  259. Brooke says:

You forgot about making Valentine’s Day themed food for the kids 😉

  260. chrissy says:

Wow! the jewelry is awesome! I hope to have a nice dinner with hubs – and the kids too. 😉

  261. Marna Easton-Aguilar says:

I think we will take Valentine’s Day back too and make it about us! The boys get treats all the time. I think it is mommy and daddy’s turn. I would love to have a non-stressful meal at a nice adult only restaurant! (Don’t get me wrong, I am crazy about my boys but mommy could use a break! And some bling!!!)

  262. Lynn says:

This is our first Valentine’s Day with our daughter and I’m ecstatic that my mom is coming up to stay with her so we can go out 🙂 Of course she’s only 3 months old right now and has no idea what holidays are…lol

  263. Erika says:

My husband and I will try to enjoy a quiet dinner together where we don’t talk about the kids at all. Who knew that could be so hard!

  264. Karla says:

My hubby always remembers, but we don’t really do anything together for valentine’s day- i don’t like going out on that day anyway because it is so expensive!

  265. Donna Armstrong says:

I like the wrought swirl peridot earrings. But I LOVE chocolate!

  266. Emily says:

I love the spicy Indian idea! Vindaloo after the kiddos go to sleep!

  267. Amy B says:

We just moved across the country and have no babysitting family members around anymore for our toddler. Valentine’s Day will probably more non-existant that usual this year. A beautiful necklace would definitely cheer me up!

  268. Jessica Adams says:

My son’s preschool teachers are all writing something good or funny that the child did at preschool for the Parents to have how fun!

  269. Laura D says:

We’ll be celebrating by doing the exact same thing that we do every night. Collapsing after DS goes to bed. 🙂

  270. Laurie says:

Valentine’s Day was a few months after we were married and there was no card, no chocolates, no present. I was more than a little upset at the time, but learned that’s just the way he is (“just an excuse to pick a poor man’s pocket!”) No question he loves me after 38 yrs. and we try to celebrate with a special dinner at home (only amateurs go out on Valentine’s Day!)

  271. Lizz says:

My husband and I are going to one of our favorite restaurants for an early-ish dinner. It’s just easier and less traumatic (for all) if we get home in time to put the kids – ages 2 and 5 – to bed, and not the sitter. Still pretty excited!

  272. Jenna says:

    Go parents only Val day!!!

  273. Karla says:

Nothing…per usual. Just another day around here.

  274. Heidi O says:

I love the Bubble Earrings and Ring. Not sure what we’ll do for Valentine’s day. We don’t usually do anything.

  275. Modern Mom says:

When my hubs and I were first dating, we tried the loud restaurant option. Of course, before our ears were deadened by children noise, it was too loud for us. Noise, crowds, etc. We instituted a new plan that has stuck and is now cherished, even though we have to wait for kids to go to bed. Hubs makes me a steak and lobster dinner, we drink wine (LOTS more than we used to before kids), and dance to Frank Sinatra. I look forward to our US time every year. Even if we only get that one day. *sigh*

  276. Kate says:

Sparkly! I’m a single mom so I gave to get my jewelry from somewhere!

  277. liz says:

Continuing the tradition from my mom, I will set up the breakfast table specially with treats. Then my birthday is the next day so we are going to have a very rare date! Wahoo 🙂

  278. Pat says:

How fun! We usually hit the Japanese steak house 🙂

  279. Allyson says:

I’m such a bad mother. Valentine’s is not a big deal in this house.

  280. Emma says:

I don’t get the whole making valentines day about the kids thing (and especially the providing goodies to every kid in the class…. wth?!?). Then again, hubby and I don’t do anything special for it either… so maybe I should rephrase that as I don’t get the whole valentines day thing, period. To me, valentines day is for teenagers who think they’re in love to embarrass their girlfriends with flowers or chocolates sent to their school.
Yeah, um… guess I’m not a romantic. (But I’d love to win the necklace!!!).

  281. Amy says:

This year I’m making fillet mignon with bernaise sauce. Roasted asparagus and smashed red potatoes. For dessert lava cakes. We’re staying home because I don’t have anyone to watch the boys on Valentines day. The birthstone necklace on your website is beautiful. Happy Valentines Day!!

  282. Shannon says:

My birthday is on Valentine’s Day. We learned long ago (long before children), that you do not try to eat out on Valentine’s Day. The crowds make the meal seem so much less romantic and since it is my husband’s Valentine’s Day too, I’ve been cooking for him on that day for years. Recently, that has evolved into him working all day and I make all Valentine’s for kids, make a big Valentine’s meal and make my own birthday cake. I know, I created this monster…but the monster must be stopped. I’m taking back my Valentine’s Day and my birthday! Thank you for the inspiration…

    • Lynann says:

It’s my daughter’s bday too, and I often wonder how it will be for her when she’s older. It’s fun, now, she always gets a party at school on her Birthday. She’ll be eight this year.

  283. Emily says:

Thinking about buying a small for for hubby this year…

  284. cortney says:

Valentine’s will consist of all of our normal stuff and maybe a movie after pumping/nursing then I’ll fall asleep and he will likely sleep in three couch with me! At least that’s our pattern since becoming parents 5 yrs ago today! I really love that sparkly tho, maybe next yr!

  285. Lauren A. says:

We generally have not celebrated valentines day, even before kids. And I legitimately don’t care. (Not just say I don’t but secretly feel slighted.) Today, my husband sent me flowers because he said I sounded like I was having a hard day. And that’s why I don’t care about getting something on valentines day.

  286. Heather M. says:

Looks like we will be spending Valentine’s Day as a family, but dinner for two on Saturday. Hoping my husband has been getting the obvious hints of what I would like on that special day!

  287. Emiko says:

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. Our anniversary is our “us” day, with is earlier in February. For that, we are dropping the kid off with a friend and getting a nice lovely lunch at a French restaurant and enjoying each others company for the afternoon.

  288. Taylor D says:

Love the necklace in the picture, but couldn’t view the website. It said their bandwidth limit was exceeded. I’m sure their other stuff is pretty too! Our anniversary is two days before Valentines Day, and we forget EVERY YEAR. 😉

  289. Ang Johnson says:

I always love your posts, as they are not only relatable, but highly entertaining and never fail to bring a smile to my face!
As far as what we’ll do for Valentine’s Day, ummm, let’s see, we usually don’t celebrate it that much since our anniversary is just a few days later and that kind of takes over the whole thing, ha! But we usually go out (now that our oldest are teens and can be easily bribed, nyahaha!) to one of our favorite restaurants like a regular old couple, heh. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  290. Kerry says:

I moved beyond “Wait… I’m supposed to do something for my kids on Valentine’s Day?” to actually having some ideas. Thanks!

I want chocolate all to myself, too.

  291. Kimberly F says:

We will be skiing in Whistler on Valentine’s Day, with kids in tow, so we’ll celebrate another day.

  292. Tina says:

Well, my husband will be with our Sr. High group from church on Valentine’s Day (well, for the weekend it falls on). I showed him this, he said “Who do you want to get to watch the kids the weekend before?” So we’ll do something, at least dinner out, he knows that’s my favorite thing! 🙂

  293. Vivbrant says:

Honestly, I love Valentine’s day for the same reason I love Halloween: the chocolate is cheap *after*!

  294. Cristin says:

Valentine’s Day will probably be like any other day…but you are right, we should take it back!!

  295. Frances Landreth says:

I’m teaching Bradley Method class on Valentine’s Day night, so we aren’t doing anything on the actual night. We’re going to see Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me the night before, and there’s been talk of going to dinner somewhere the night after, but we’ve been too busy to do anything about it.

  296. Karrie says:

Every day should be valentines day. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you every chance you get!

  297. Holly Lane says:

Beautiful designs. Thankful for the chance to win

  298. Fuzzy says:

I think we’re going to get a babysitter and have a nice dinner together. Haven’t done that in so long!

  299. Lucy says:

Yayyy for this giveaway! I love jewelry and since it seems clear I won’t be getting any from anyone on the 14th, maybe I can win some! Oh and you can give me the coconut chocolates too!!

  300. Erin Wood says:

Sooo true! We are actually getting my mother-in-law to watch the kids for us so we can go out to dinner – but not until the day after. It’s too crowded and expensive to actually go out on Valentine’s Day!

  301. Erin says:

Valentines Day?! I totally forgot about that. Hmmm. I like chocolate and flowers. I better put my order in early before it gets subsumed under the piles of laundry and dishes.

  302. eva says:

I love the birthstones jewelery, my husband got me a ring after our daughter was born and it has our 3 birthstones ( so I need a necklace to match 😉
    love your blog!

  303. Devon says:

Valentine’s Day? Hmm…it’s been so long that I’ll have to think of something for us to do!
That necklace is a good way to incorporate all of my family into the day. And it helps that it sparkles too!

  304. JAN says:

Any kind of uninterrupted dinner is romantic at this point with three kids!

  305. Laura says:

We do a ‘love-week’ as we started dating Feb 7 (many years ago) and always wrap it up with the ‘Valentine Day High’. Not exactly the mile high but fun just the same! These days it is a high point to get 6 hours of sleep–in our own bed–alone…and I do mean sleep! No big plans on the horizon for Feb 14 but fingers crossed for a dinner out, sometime that week.

  306. Bricia R. Bartlett says:

    Eating yummy tarts 😉

  307. Denise Z says:

lucky for me we already have chocolates in the house (leftovers from girl scout sales…do they do the Fall Sale of nuts/chocolate/magazines by you?). hubby may be ‘leavin’ on a jet plane’ for work overseas, but I’ll try to do something romantic with him the night before. unless we can’t ’cause we’ll have a houseful of guests (in-laws, yippee!)…in that case I’ll drink a bottle – er, I mean glass of wine and eat those chocolates myself after kids/in-laws are in bed. Happy Valentine’s to all~!

  308. Geny says:

We are going to dinner on the 13th because we are just unlucky like that!

Seriously though, hard to find a sitter on a Friday night that’s a holiday.

Still, I’m looking forward to going out and eating an uninterrupted meal!

  309. Kimberly says:

Valentine’s Day? That must be coming up soon, right? Well, since I’m not sure which day of the week it will fall on, that probably tells you what kind of plans we’ve made. But what fun it would bring to the day if I won a necklace!

  310. Delia says:

I can just see it with my 3 kids’ birthstones…beautiful!

  311. Amanda says:

Wow, V-Day has kind of been off my radar this year with a two year old and expecting a second in March, but I expect we will at least do the card thing. Any excuse for dinner out is lovely, so maybe if the babysitting cards are in alignment… 🙂 Thanks for doing the giveaway, the sparklies do look beautiful! (I’d be tempted to just pick the colors I like, though, because our months are kind of ugly together. But it’d be a *meaningful* ugly, I suppose.)

  312. April says:

How are we celebrating Valentine’s Day? A local church has offered $10 babysitting for 3 hours (11 am to 2 pm). Not per hour, but $10 for the whole time for the first kid… successive siblings free. 🙂

The idea is to allow parents a lunch date alone. But we’re just going to go home and have sex. Because it’s been waaaaay too long since we’ve had sex without trying to be quiet/not wake up the kids, or getting interrupted by someone crying, or hurrying because of [insert child-related reason here], etc. I don’t even want to subconsciously have to be aware of where my kids are or what they’re doing while I’m with my husband.

  313. Elizabeth says:

Since it’s our anniversary on the 12th hopefully I’ll get something for either that or Valentines. Hubby will get a box of chocs from me and that is about as much attention as we pay to valentines.

  314. Tina Clay says:

Love all the posts. Our vday will be spent packing cleaning Oh yeah and my Favorite part filing TAXES. Since we are moving end of march. The joys.

  315. Martha says:

The crappy thing about dining alone with my husband is that we start out all giddy and fancy free, but always end up talking about our darling child half the time we’re out, then we call Grandma’s to check on said darling and then we take too long enjoying our food and stress out about not getting home on time, etc. It’s like we’re prisoners even when we’ve been released on parole!

  316. Lynann says:

No parental aloneness on Valentines here, we had a baby on that day, she turns 8 this year. 🙂 One day, she’ll have moved out and want to spend it with her friends/boyfriend and my husband and I will finally get to go out together, alone. And I’ll spend the whole time reminiscing about the day she was born and missing her like mad.

    • Lidia says:

Me too! Our first born will be 8 on the 13th, and our second son will be 6 on the 14th. Valentine’s day stopped being about us long ago.

  317. Larissa says:

It is true. My son is not yet two, and we seldom do things for us. Sigh. Thing is, when my husband and I do get to something alone…we start to talk about all the rest of the things we should do!! And We get super excited because anything is possible! And I might even get lucky tonight because the planets have aligned and the stars are writing our future…and then he wakes up. Crying. Well, it was fun to think about right?

  318. Tara says:

my son thinks hearts should look like real hearts, so we usually make anatomically correct valentines, if we make ’em. sometimes we ignore holidays and just eat chocolate for no reason.

  319. Teri says:

I’ll spend Valentines Day like I spend every other night, picking up my kids from basketball practice and trying to decide what food to throw at them for dinner. But I’ll probably wear a red sweater for effect.

  320. Mrs. P says:

We don’t usually celebrate valentines but this year we are due for a date night. Perhaps we’ll have an un-valentines date the week before…

  321. Amanda says:

I loved the stacked birthstone rings! And we are doing absolutely nothing for valentine’s day.

  322. Tarah says:

I’d love to go out to dinner with my husband, it’s not often we’re able to escape the kiddos & not quiver in fear over the threat of waiting for a table. I remember we went out once, sans the kids, and the hostess told us it was a 45 minute wait for a table. We looked at each other, said “Sure! We’ll wait at the bar!” It’s amazing how things change once you have kids.

  323. Theresa says:

I’ll make my husband his traditional request of “death by chocolate cake” and decorate the house. It’s usually no super special holiday since we tell each other we love each other every day.

  324. Martha says:

My favorite Valentine’s day was the one when my husband and I went to watch a ski jumping competition in Vermont. It was awesome.

  325. Zoie says:

Hopefully we will get lucky enough to grab some Mexican food for dinner, like we do any chance we both strangely have Ana evening not at work. How romantic. The jewelery looks beautiful!

  326. Charity says:

Valentines Schmalentines…. to be honest, we really didn’t celebrate before kids. But my mother-in-law made V-day cards with my 3 year old and is mailing them to family. Way to show me up, MIL. Maybe when she starts school, MIL will keep that responsibility. She started it, it’s her own fault.

  327. Amy Bassett says:

A quiet dinner at home after the kids are sleep sounds absolutely marvelous. Thanks for the idea!

  328. Janet says:

This post had me rolling on the floor laughing. So funny!

  329. Cindy says:

I went to the website to pick my favorite piece and I just can’t. So instead, for Valentine’s Day, I’ll be putting the kids to bed and having a nice dinner with my husband at home.

  330. Ivy says:

No kids here, but we’ve never made a big deal out of valentine’s day. It seems like an arbitrary commercial holiday these days. We usually just exchange cards – does that make us boring?

  331. Amber H. says:

Husband and I will probably eat a steak dinner at home since we don’t have a sitter. Hopefully the kids go to sleep early 😀

  332. Diana A says:

We don’t go out for Valentine’s — restaurants are crowded & have set menus, ugh. Going out on Valentines makes me self conscious, ugh. For now, with 3.5yo b/g twins, we still LIKE doing Family Love Valentine’s Day, I especially like the idea of teaching my daughter that you don’t need to feel down if you don’t have a love interest on Feb14!, and it’s on Fri which is pizza day, so we will make heart shaped pizza & LOVE it :). But, baubles & bits are ALWAYS appreciated :).

  333. Krista R. Wilson says:

My MIL lives here now so we may actually get a whole night alone!

  334. S. Lester says:

I can so identify with this! Especially the spicy food.

  335. Kinzie says:

Hoo… maybe some wine and chocolates. AFTER the kids go to bed, like you said. It helps that it falls on a weekend.

  336. S M says:

Indeed…having a night that is like the whole reason we got into this whole D*mn mess. It’s amazing how our expectations are lowered after kids come.

  337. teagansmomma says:

    these are gorgeous!

  338. Kim B says:

Ah, Valentines Day, when my husband grumps about this “Corporate, Made-up day”. I usually send over-the-top cards to my grown-up children. My son responds, “Yeah, just what a grown man wants. A fancy card from his mother.” And I tell myself that he secretly loves it and probably will keep the card forever and ever. My other son says thanks. My grandkids will get fun cards that they will tape to their bed or put under their pillows.

If I want flowers I will buy them for myself. Ditto for chocolate. But I will make him watch a sappy movie with me. He’ll pretend to grumble. It’s what we do.

  339. Sophia Iwanaga says:

Pepperoni pizza with the kids, sad but true I’m sure!

  340. Rachael says:

What the heck do we need to give our kids Valentine’s stuff for? It’s a holiday celebrating illicit marriage. My toddler doesn’t need to be in on that scene. I’m taking it back.

  341. Bethany says:

Such beautiful jewelry!…my husband actually has the daddy/daughter dance on Valentine’s Day. Why do they do that to us?

  342. Oh, a romantic dinner sounds so lovely…a girl can dream, right? I’ll probably just have discounted chocolate a few days after Valentine’s Day like usual. But I’m not sharing them with the kids.

  343. andrea says:

Couldn’t agree more. My plan this year is starting Feb 1st until the 14th, to leave a little “how do I love thee” note for him each day. and a lovely dinner just the two of us after the kids have gone to bed.

  344. Katie says:

I feel the same way…would love to have a night of peace and quiet with my husband!

  345. hannah says:

Gorgeous!! I’d love to win one of these!

  346. Amanda says:

    Those are really cool!

  347. I think we’ll stay in and fall asleep at around 9pm. Now THAT’s an awesome Valentine’s Day.

  348. Nia says:

No big V Day plans this year. Hopefully we’ll just have a nice dinner together. We’re following a new budget so no gifts. Oh, but I’ll definitely be baking something chocolates for dessert!

  349. Heather Sutherland says:

I would love to win this. We do the same thing for Valentine’s as we do for each other’s birthdays and our anniversary. Something at home after dh goes to bed.

  350. Allison says:

My husband is, yet again, not at home for Valentine’s Day. So it probably really will be just about Valentine’s crafts with the child and her Valentine’s party at school. But, I love the idea of taking back the day … next year maybe.

  351. Heather Sutherland says:

That should have read “dd” – although truth be told, I often celebrate more when both of them are in bed! 🙂

  352. Michelle says:

We don’t usually celebrate valentine’s day in any special way. We sometimes like to a date night at home, where we order in after the kids are in bed. Secretly, even though they cost an arm and a leg, I would love to get some flowers that day. 🙂

  353. MVN says:

    Valentines Day? What’s that?
    Seriously….

  354. Lilly says:

So true! Take back v-day (if I can stay awake after kid’s bedtime!)!

  355. Tricia says:

    what a great piece!

  356. Jessica says:

We always do v-day on the 15th instead, that way, we avoid the crowds and can spend v-day with the kiddo at home.

We have done this since we were dating ….so it is a great tradition that allows us to still take valentines day and make it our own.

  357. Valentines day will be spent at home and possibly celebrated when my two year old goes to sleep. I remember the Valentine’s day just before my son was born, it was really nice. Dinner out, jewelry, and walking around town at night.

  358. vicki says:

    Pizza and the dog show!

  359. Em says:

We have a toddler and an infant, so we are just hoping for sleep!

  360. Judith says:

Any surprise from my husband would make my Valentine’s Day. I like surprises (and US time too)!

  361. Kristi says:

For Valentines day I want to get away with my husband.

  362. Terri says:

    Beauty necklace!

  363. Kellie Holzer says:

My spouse and I were thinking about going to a lecture about shipwrecks on V-day. Seriously. For fun. And for romance. Without the potty-training 2.8 year old. It will be awesome.

  364. mariah says:

    I’d love one!

  365. Lisa Dawson says:

This is my first Valentine’s day with my soulmate. I have finally been reconnected with my other half. Sappy, I know, but it’s so true. We are picking out rings from Metalicious 🙂

What will be going down on Valentine’s Day? Going bar hoping with our friends from California. Forget wine and chocolate. It will be beer and pizza here.

  366. R Brundrett says:

Would love to have a necklace to represent my family!

  367. Kristine says:

Hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day, however the celebrations go!

  368. Amanda says:

I’ll just be happy if my husband remembers and says “Happy Valentine’s Day.” Flowers or a card would blow my mind!

  369. Linette G says:

That is TOO funny!!!! That is exactly how EVERY holiday or event is in our house. I love it…

  370. Amanda G says:

No plans yet. We’ve recently moved and we don’t live near family (aka our babysitters) anymore. With no sitter, we’ll probably stay in but try to make it special.

  371. Lori Yablunosky says:

Just doing dinner and a movie after the kids r in bed.

  372. Jo says:

Our first Valentines day as a married couple (pre-kids) I got off work early and cooked a nice roast with veggies and made a cake. The hubby wasn’t too impressed. I have never done that again. Three kids later all I usually get is … nothing really sticks out in my memory. I spend most of my time helping the kids fill out their Valentines day cards. Yea fun!!!

    I’d love some pretty bling.

  373. Katie Wilmot says:

We always avoid the Valentine’s Day itself and celebrate on our own time. But I’ve always made sure we do something. This year we using a big gift card we won at a Christmas party. Dress up, drop the kiddo off at mom’s and talk like adults! 🙂 I can’t wait…whenever we go!

  374. Emily R. says:

Not sure what our V-Day plans are yet, but I think it would be fun to make homemade pizza together that night. We both ordered each other gifts online, so hopefully they’ll make it here in time!

  375. Terri says:

going to sneak a piece of pie after the kids go to bed… 🙂

  376. I think this year my husband and I will actually get a sitter and go out. We have our anatomy ultrasound for our second child that week and I think it would be fun to reveal the sex when we are out together. 🙂

  377. Lindsey says:

Was just thinking what can I do for the kids this valentines! I would love that necklace! I am on a debt diet so no baubles or nice dinners:(

  378. beth says:

We’re celebrating on the evening of the 13th, probably by leaving the kids with the sitter so we can go to Sonic and then the grocery store in peace.

  379. Emily says:

Valentine’s Day has become kind of weird, since 2/14 was my second husband’s first wife’s birthday. (It still is her birthday; he just never talks to her any more.) And I had gotten engaged to my first husband on a Valentine’s Day, as well. Baggage all around!

So, we both have trouble celebrating it as a big Love Bird holiday. Meanwhile, we’ve got a pile of kids, so we have turned it into a kid fest, and that a-okay with us. 🙂

Hey, if I win the contest, can I spend extra money to get additional stones added? I’ve got 6 kids, although they are only born in 4 different months, so I might just go that way, too. 😉

  380. Justine says:

Gonna have a date night without the kid, probably the last one we’ll have before the new little one arrives 🙂

  381. Brandy says:

This will be the first Valentine’s Day that my husband I will have together since 2010, and we have nothing planned but lots of family time since he deploys shortly after V-Day.

  383. Sara says:

    So pretty!

Valentines day is absolutely not about kids for us- they weren’t even conceived valentines day- nope no babies allowed . It is the one day a year I will refuse to share my food or even be present with them. Instead it’s like this: Hire a baby sitter and go out for dinner so I don’t have to cook, have a nice glass of wine or champagne and then maybe a night in a hotel. With a big box/block of chocolate.

epic hotel sex? I wish last time we just flaked it on the big hotel bed and woke up refreshed the next morning for once. probably weighing an extra ten pounds from the chocolate and food consumption because my boys didn’t eat 2/3 of it on me.

unfortunately, my husband has never been one to do anything to celebrate valentine’s day- he always says he can buy me flowers/chocolate any day… yeah, but he never does!!!!

We have 1 1/2 year old twins, so romance has taken a bit of a back seat. But I’ve got my fingers crossed for chocolate! 😉

Love your blog! Tears of laughter!

I like the raw collection. It’s so beautiful! And in the 4 years we’ve been married we’ve never done anything for Valentine’s day. My husband says he doesn’t need a day created by “The Man” to appreciate his wife. lol

Tell me about it. I’m actually going to go out with a girlfriend this Valentine’s day for a much needed girls night out. I’m in dire need of husband time and friend time! The husband and I are going to do dinner on the 15th instead. Nice, quiet, grown up dinner!
Good for you for making sure you still have couple time!

Haha! I think I did that when I was little, but I also got enough candy at school when I got older that I didn’t need to raid my mom’s.

This is what I get to look forward to when I was have children.

  391. Elaine says:

I love this for so many reasons. My eldest (of 3) is in preschool and I’m not looking forward to the years ahead of making sure everyone in class gets a valentine. When I was little, my parents wouldn’t get me a valentines day gift, but other kids did. They said, “valentines day is not for that kind of love.” Now I get it! I want a date too, not silly crappy gifts for kids. I love them, but candy hearts don’t show it.

My hubby and I love to gave Indian food and white wine. I love the champagne idea! I love cupcakes and champagne, maybe all three would be the perfect combo!

And I absolutley love that necklace. I was looking for something like that recently. Hoping to receive one for Christmas. I’m so sad I missed the entry date, but thanks for sharing!

  392. Heck yes! I don’t think I have ever done anything special for my kids for V-Day. lol It’s definitely a time I expect to get pampered by my Mr. Sexy. ::wink wink::
