Non-Crappy Book Giveaway: The Good Mother Myth

Hey, it’s a non-crappy BOOK giveaway!

This time it is The Good Mother Myth: Redefining Motherhood to Fit Reality which is a collection of essays written by a diverse group of mothers that just came out this week. Check out all of the contributors.  Pssst – I’m one of them!

crappy-good-mother-myth

Some of the essays are heartfelt and sincere and soul-wrenching. Some of them are funny. Some of them are confessions. Some of them have an agenda. Some of them will have you nodding and thinking, “thank goodness I’m not the only one who has had dark moments like that” and some of them will rub you in all the wrong ways. But that is why this book is great. It stretches your definition of ‘good mother’ and it makes you think.

Can a good mother smoke pot? How many times can a mother drop her child on his/her head and still be a good mother? What about a mother who struggles with depression? What about a mother who lives in a different state from her child? What about a mother who obsessively compares herself to another mother she once saw at Trader Joe’s? Just like that old spaghetti sauce commercial, it’s in there.

(PS – that last essay I mentioned that sounds annoying? The one about the obsessed mother comparing herself to someone at Trader Joe’s? That one is mine. I don’t think I actually specified that it was at Trader Joe’s in the essay so now you have, like, insider information and stuff.)

Get to the point! Here it is…

I was given two author copies and I’m giving one away! And it will be SIGNED. By me. Not by everyone. I’ll probably also draw a picture in it somewhere because I can. So there’s that.

This is shipping straight from me and I’m happy to ship anywhere in the world if you win.

  304. Rachel says:

I was just reading yet another article about a mom who decided to never yell at her kids, and feeling annoyed bc while I think it’s fairly basic that not-yelling is way better than yelling, it’s also much less realistic given the depths of crazy our children often get to, so instead of feeling inspired, I just feel bad. This book feels very welcome right now!

  305. Michelle says:

Omg! I’d be so excited to get this! I have your book and would love this to add to the collection! If you vouche for these ladies than they have to be awesome just like you!! 🙂

35 years ago, I knew a young mom who vowed never to say” NO” to her baby daughter, because that word was ..ahem…. so negative. She wanted to avoid the whole screaming NO thing that was looming in the future when the kid would turn two.
Instead this thoughtful mother said, “Stop.” Stop was not negative, she reasoned. It was a helpful command that would keep her child safe. Right?
Guess what her child did with that?
    Yeah….
    “MOP!!!! MOP, MOMMA! MOPPPPPP!!”

While reading this post I couldn’t help but think about “mothers past”… did everyone (Grandma, Great Grandma, etc) feel like we do? Did they care? Or did they just go about their business, dropping babies on their heads and not giving a damn because nobody else gave a damn? I’m very interested in this book, if I don’t win I certainly hope my local library picks it up. I know I want to know how other mothers feel!

  350. MrsJennyK says:

This sounds so interesting! Obsessively comparing yourself to a mom you saw in Trader Joe’s? You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that I am not the only one who has done that. “What would TJMom do in this situation?” “I’ll bet TJMom wouldn’t have fed her child that McDonald’s hamburger.” “How does TJMom have it so together with three kids? I’m such a loser!”

BTW, I loved the Crappy Baby Running Away post! Every time my daughter wants to run away, I tell her that we will miss her too much and will never stop crying when she’s gone – at which point she tell me that we can go with her. Next time I’m going to make sure she wants to run away to somewhere with room service.

  449. Genevieve says:

I’m very much looking forward to reading this (either a won copy or a library copy…which will probably get returned when my overdue amount is $12 or $13 as is my habit lol)! We put ourselves on such high pedestals that we end up knocking ourselves down when really ours is exactly the same height as everyone else’s! I felt TERRIBLE when I gave my kids canned sweet potatoes mixed with brown sugar, butter and chunks of turkey ham. Why? Cause the sweet potatoes were canned and the turkey ham was PRETTY processed. They didn’t die of it and in fact they loved it! Looking back it was not the lose/lose situation I thought it was. It’s funny the things we bat ourselves up about because it’s so hard to just believe in our abilities to be the parents our kids need us to be!

I like to know I’m not on a mom-island by myself. Also, on your TJ’s anecdote, I had a similar experience at Target, but not. When I was walking in, wearing workout clothes, wearing one baby and pushing another, I saw myself come out. Or someone who used to be me. She had great hair, dressed awesomely for her work day and had no smudges of anything anywhere on her person. And she was only carrying a person and 1 Target bag. It made me actually stop in front of the store and take a moment.

    • katie says:

carrying a PURSE. not a person. One purse and 1 target bag. Geez. I can’t remember the last time I carried just a purse and any other bag.
