Happy Non-Crappy Valentine’s Day

I remember the first Valentine’s Day I spent with Crappy Husband (aka Crappy Papa) when we were dating.

I wore a red dress and caviar was involved, though not in the way one might expect.

We stood in the hallway and he hugged me. A long embrace, the kind that keeps on going and you never want to let go.

I remember thinking:

hugging-sleeping

And I did.

I was reminded of that moment last night.

Late last night, after a very long day, we hugged in the kitchen:

It was a long hug. Another prolonged, romantic, “falling in love” type embrace.

Except I wasn’t thinking about falling in love.

Instead:

Falling in love is great. But being in love is way more fun.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

You two are so cute! Happy Val Day! Sleep is my favorite thing these days…teens can be as exhausting as preschoolers.

    • cassie says:

Amen to that sister! I sometimes think to myself – I’d trade this mouthy jerk of a teenager for a crabby toddler any day! Then they do their own laundry and wipe their own butts and I change my mind again ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. It is, indeed! Mr. Sandwich and I have gone out to dinner on Valentine’s Day a couple of times, but mostly he just brings me flowers and we otherwise ignore it. I think this year we’re going to take Baguette to the mall for a haircut for Valentine’s Day.

    Not romantic, but definitely cute.

  3. SJH says:

This is the cutest story! Can I just say that with so many “mom” blogs coming across as pretty down on their husbands, I love-love-LOVE how much you and Crappy Papa love each other. ๐Ÿ™‚ <3

    • Kathy says:

I completely agree! If you want your spouse to be kind and loving, you have to be kind and loving!

    • Sara says:

Ditto this, I always cringe when other writers bash their husbands publicly on their blogs, I mean, don’t their husbands read it?

  4. Katie says:

Your posts always make me chuckle! I noticed that your boobs and hair flip disappeared in the current scene ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. jen says:

Been there! Done that! hahahah LOVE YOUR BLOG!!

  7. Meri says:

I love all the hearts! You guys are so cute!!! This is my last valentines day with my guy before we get married in May! So excited!!

  8. Grandma TJ says:

You guys are adorable. Yes, being in love means you can just be there together and love each other, while the world moves on… even after 32 years…. I am blessed! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Tammy says:

That’d be a great conversation to overhear. “Yeah, last night, we did it standing. I just hung onto him and bam! Who knew that was even possible! It was awesomeโ€ฆ”

  10. Kim Furnell says:

You’re right, BEING in love is so much better than all the superficial Valentines Day garbage. No, my hubby won’t get me flowers and we won’t go out to a “romantic” restaurant. I won’t get a shiny, sparkly something and he won’t get lingerie. But he does take my car and fill it up with gas for me so I don’t have to stop in the morning on my way to work/school. After 26 years, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  11. Emily says:

Oh, I laughed so hard! Yes indeed!

  12. Rebecca says:

love it, love the sweet drawings too with all the hearts ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Vday Amber!

  13. Maggie says:

I for one want to hear more about the unexpected caviar. Next year’s V-Day post, perhaps? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. Angie says:

    U r awesome!!!

  15. Jacob Divett says:

Oh man I have been there. Valentine’s Day has lost a little something.

  16. Leah says:

As soon as I read long hug, I started to doze off. Tonight, while buying junk food for our big snow storm, I realized I still needed a valentine for my husband from me and one from the baby. I bought the first two I picked up. The triviality of card buying is exhausting. But I love how you had boobs in the dating picture! They were so perky! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. KG says:

Aren’t you so happy we’re checking our your boobs? LOL! ๐Ÿ˜› You are awesome!

  18. Awww you are too cute, your story about falling in love is wonderful but the ever after is the best part. Feeling a bit warm and smushy now x

  19. Chris Carter says:

Oh this is just so cute!! I totally get that! I actually recently wrote a post about “Love is in the leftovers”… I’m sure you would relate to it all…

True love is when you can embrace and fall asleep standing. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. Lisa says:

Ah the sleeping prop hug, we do that too. Love is grand but the by products that run around can be exhausting!

  21. Lana says:

    Naaww.. sleep well happy valentines

  22. Jennifer says:

Aww, I love this story! And it’s so true! Happy Valentine’s Day!

My husband and I were just talking last night, as I was getting all Pinterest on our daughter’s valentines for her daycare friends, that while all the dating Valentine’s Day is fun, celebrating Valentine’s Day with our daughter and making things for her friends is much more fun and rewarding. Sometimes being an adult doesn’t suck.

  23. Jennifer H. says:

So sweet my teeth hurt. Sleep well, valentines.

  24. Zoe says:

Being allowed to sleep is the most romantic thing EVER!!

  25. nora nuno says:

    lmao sooo true <3

  26. MandyPandy says:

    Happy love day Amber!

  27. Dave says:

A 10 second hug or longer is supposed to release some good chemicals or something. Just make sure the other person isn’t trying to get away after about two seconds in. Then it just gets creepy.

  28. Erin says:

My husband fell asleep at the dinner table tonight. (He was sitting in his desk chair and had finished eating, tipped the chair back just a little and …)

Our four-year-old said “Look at Daddy!” Me: “Yep, you wore him out getting him to pull you all over town in the bike trailer today!” I have to agree with Amber that although falling in love with my husband was fantastic, being in love — and seeing him fall asleep because our kiddoes ran him ragged — is even better.
