Buttcakes Recipe

Have you ever played “awesome mom” and made pancakes in cute little shapes? Mickey Mouse? Snowmen? (And even hearts if you felt really ambitious.)

My kids are no longer impressed by any of those.

They’ll only eat buttcakes. Lucky for you, I’m in the sharing mood. My first crappy recipe!

buttcakes-recipe

Buttcakes Recipe, serves exactly however many you make

1. Make your usual pancake mix. It could have flax meal in it. It could be vegan. It could be made with rice flour. It could be from a box from the store. It doesn’t matter. Buttcakes are flexible and forgiving.

2. Pour a dollop of mix in the pan as though you are making normal, boring, stupid pancakes.

3. Quickly pour a second, equally sized one right next to it. They should fuse together in the center.  Like a venn diagram*.

4. Proceed normally like it is a regular, boring, stupid pancake. You know, flip it on time and stuff. Don’t burn it!

5. Done! Serve on a plate with a sense of humor.

6. Pairings: maple syrup is classic but add chocolate chips for bonus gross/coolness points. You know why. (Use chocolate for breakfast with caution. Many children do not know that this is legal.)

*This is a venn diagram:

buttcakes

Nutritional Facts: Buttcakes are just as nutritious as other shapes.

Good luck & happy crappy cooking!

LOL “boring stupid pancakes”!! I will never make those again after this helpful tutorial!

  2. Adriane says:

Does it go with apple juice?

  3. Angie says:

Oh man, my daughters always request complicated shapes like My Little Pony and they always turn out like sad blobs. Buttcakes I could handle pretty well, ha ha ha, they would laugh so hard.

    • erin says:

Look up Jim’s pancake blog. He has some great tips for complicated shapes. My son is only 14 months, though, so I can’t say I’ve used any of his tips.

  4. AKD says:

You could put a squirt of Nutella coming right out of the butt seam!!

  5. Sara Golden says:

I love it! And the Venn Diagram clears things up a bit:) so funny! I see Butt cakes in our future!

  6. Karen says:

I’m having a little trouble understanding your instructions. Particularly the “don’t burn it” part since I haven’t been able to acheive the non-burnt results in my prior attempts.

    • Amy says:

The trick to perfect pancakes is waiting for the pan to get hot enough that water quickly sizzles off when a few drops are thrown on. Then, make your buttcakes, waiting for bubbles to form in the middle of the cake (the sides will look a little dry). Ta-da! Perfect buttcakes.

      • Civik says:

Don’t cook on high heat. Pan should be pre-heated and if using an electric range, so should the element.

Flip when the bubbles on top fail to close after popping.

    • Esther says:

Turn your heat down a bit.

  7. Lol. You make those Japanese bento moms look pretty silly.

    • Tina says:

LOL, indeed! This is on a whole ‘nother level.

    • amber says:

Goodbye tiny cookie cutters and hard boiled eggs turned into kitty cats with whiskers made from slivers of black olives. You just need butts.

      • Amber says:

for sure! who has time for that shit anyways!!!

        • Jess says:

hey, I have one (two) of those hard boiled egg shapers! they don’t take any extra time, and they still don’t get eaten when they get sent in lunchboxes.

so it’s just me that enjoys heart shaped eggs. might make heart shaped deviled eggs for valentines next year…

  8. Tina says:

LOL, my boys will love this, thanks!

  9. Melissa says:

Between penis pizza and buttcakes I’m not sure I ever want to eat at your house.

  10. Sophie says:

That’s just wonderful….and it is also going to be what my kids have for breakfast tomorrow, and they will LOVE them! (also, cinnamon chips are AWESOME in pancakes too!)

    • Delora says:

ooh, I’ve never tried cinnamon chips, but I’m a big fan of peanut butter chips in pancakes.

  11. Liz says:

I love your sense of humor and that you’d actually make something like this for your boys. Many moms I know would be way too uptight. You must have a very fun house, it is inspiring. 🙂

  12. Trish says:

    Venn diagram! So funny!

  13. Heidi says:

I love the, “Buttcakes are flexible and forgiving.” Makes me wonder what other foods are butt-shaped (or at least have a butt crack)…. cherries, peaches, rolls?

  14. Erin says:

My five year old girl asked what I was laughing at. I explained butt cakes. She’s not amused. Maybe more of a boy recipe.

    • Kim says:

I don’t know, my 6YO and 14YO daughters both thought it was pretty funny!

    • leslie says:

I just showed this post to my ten year old daughter. She laughed pretty hard! I even posted this to her (former) step-mom’s page. They’ll likely eat them when she goes to visit this weekend! Yeay for buttcakes!

    • Deb says:

I love to share these posts with my girls but I dare not share this one or we’ll be eating nothing but buttcakes for breakfast.

      • Corrina says:

I gave my girls the choice between eggs and buttcakes this morning, and they all got the same smile and said buttcakes. I ended up with chocolate chips down the middle, and some shredded coconut for “stuck toilet paper, Mom” lol!!

  15. Maybe you should submit this to http://www.jimspancakes.com…it looks like he hasn’t had a fresh idea in a few years! 😉

  16. Nicole says:

I am glad you’ve shared this. When my son starts eating these next year or so, I can make these for him to giggle at.

  17. Charlene says:

Best recipe EVER! I am sooo making these for my kids on the week-end. They will LOVE them. I will never make stupid old boring pancakes again. Too funny!

  18. Lindsay says:

Buttcakes are great! My hubby is a picky breakfast eater. So, these will be buttcakes for our kids & Boobcakes for him! I love when recipes can have dual purposes! 😉

    • Carolyn says:

Boobcakes!! LOL! Hubby is absolutely getting them for Father’s Day breakfast! 😛

    • Gretchen says:

Boobcakes! My husband is gonna love this!

    • Alex says:

I can totally picture the boobcakes, with a cleverly placed chocolate chip nipple. You could even surround the chocolate nipple with whipped cream when you serve them. My hubby doesn’t like pancakes but I think he might eat boobcakes.

      • Robonanny says:

I was thinking the same but strawberry nipples!

        • wilma fingerdoo says:

My 12 yo son makes Boobie Waffles for his younger sisters (6&8).

Two toaster waffles, sliced banana in the center topped with a hulled strawberry.

    • amber says:

LOL, this is the best recipe adaptation ever.

    • Laura says:

Haha!!!! I’m not sure what my kids would like better -buttcakes or boobcakes! They (2yo boy and 4yo girl) are obsessed with joking about both! So funny!

  19. Mary says:

I’m totally doing this tomorrow, but to make it more sophisticated, we’ll call them “tushie-cakes”. Haha!!

  20. Helena says:

    hehe

  21. Funny. I think once I have kids, I’m going to make these all the time, and not call them buttcakes. I just want to see how long it takes them to come up with it themselves. Probably about half a minute.

  22. Christina says:

We’re so having buttcakes tomorrow morning!!! Thanks for the awesome idea!

  23. neal says:

Gotta watch out, ’cause as your boys get older, those “buttcakes” will start to look like “boobcakes,” which you may or may not want to encourage. I’m old enough to know better, but I’m still a boy, and I’m almost willing to risk a slap to ask my wife to make me a boobcake for breakfast.

  24. Jill says:

Omg, you have got to do more recipes! A Crappy Cookbook!

  25. Noelle says:

I think I’ll make buttcakes for my almost 14 year old daughter and the Taller Half. Because I laughed really hard at this and we’re weird. So I know they’ll laugh, too. Thanks for this! 😀 😀 😀

  26. Meg says:

Hah, I thought they were called “butter cakes” until I read further. Silly me!

    • Evelyn Alejandro says:

      Meg,
I thought the same thing and that’s what I told my daughter, then I busted out laughing as I read it. Looks like I’ll be busy making buttcakes for breakfast tomorrow now!

  27. Bridget says:

Seriously….we went to ihop for brunch this morning and my son got a butt pancake! He’s almost 2 looked at it and giggled!!

    So random and funny!!

  28. Amanda says:

    Omg I love this!

What I do when making “shapecakes” is use a turkey vaster (I actually have one specifically for making shapecakes.

I make “kittycakes” (pancakes shaped like kitties.. Whiskers and all!), “Lettercakes”, “Namecakes”, and “Snowmencakes” lol! I discovered this by accident once… My 7 year old was goofing around and dropped the turkey baster into my pancake mix. I was initially annoyed, but squirted the mix into the pan cuz.. Why the hell not? And now I don’t use anything else when making pancakes 🙂

    • Rachel says:

Genius!!! Have you ever seen the cinnamon swirl pancakes? Bag with a hole, mu butt(cakes)!! A baby medicine dropper works awesome!!

  29. Jacqueline says:

I now have to do this, put two strawberry cross-slices in the middle, and call then boobie cakes. I think the toddler will like that.

  30. Chessie B says:

I’m reasonably sure that my son would insist that they’re boob cakes. He’s going through a phase…

  31. Dawn says:

Man, I wish I read this before I made stupid, boring pancakes for dinner!

  32. Michelle says:

I read the entire recipe as “buttercakes” and was wondering when the butter came into play.. and what the shape of two joined pancakes had anything to do with butter.. and then I reread it. And fell off my chair laughing. 🙂

  33. Maria says:

When they’re teens, they can be boobie cakes hee hee. 😉

  34. Tanya says:

I’ll be keeping this recipe is reserve for when I need it. At the moment my partner can hand my 2 and a half year old daughter a pancake (as long as it’s not exactly round), and ask her what she thinks it is. It’s been a whale, dolphin, lizard and more!

She did say I needed more practise though…

  35. Donna says:

You always make me laugh just when I need it. One million years ago when my children were little, I also got creative with their pancakes, we had fun thinking up new shapes to make. They also really liked their names spelled out in pancake batter. Once my brother was visiting and I made him some special pancakes that spelled out F***. I think that is the most I have ever impressed him and the kids were too little to spell the word and were busy with their pancakes anyway. My brother still says that was the most awesome thing I ever did. I wish I had thought of buttcakes. You are truly an awesome, crappy mom.

  36. Gretchen says:

Ha! I loved this, please do more recipes!! 😉

  37. Jeeva says:

Where is the picture with choc chips? 😉

  38. SherylM says:

True story: my husband’s first name is Venn, a family name on his mother’s side. They were the poor American cousins of the family of the inventor of the Venn diagram.

  39. Kelly says:

you could add a whipped cream “tail” to make them rabbit butts!

  40. neo says:

    Great idea! Clever mommy. hahha….

  41. Vanessa says:

You should burn at least one. Then run around the kitchen shouting, “My buns are burning, my buns are burning!!” They’ll love it!

  42. This is hilarious. I love it. And I love that I have learned that I’ve been using the term pie chart when I mean Venn Diagram all this time. Crappy pictures is the best!

  43. brit says:

I cannot tell you how much this made my day. We are in the process of a cross-country move so I needed this laugh. I bought a friend your book for Mother’s Day and she LOVED it. I don’t think she reads blogs so I am forwarding this now. 🙂

  44. Melissa says:

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!! Best thing EVER. Made me smile for the first time today (it is 11:29 pm).

  45. Shayla G. says:

Perfect post for my boys! Butts and penises…. There’s a new challenge for you! Thanks for the laugh! My 7-3/4 year old likes to read your book over an over again. It’s his read of choice when he’s on the john… and that’s a huge compliment! You’ve overtaken the Pokemon Handbook…!

  46. AmberChatwin says:

After a superbly crappy day yesterday I caught up with your blog! You lady are one funny mutha!
    Thanks for making me laugh!

  47. Apollina says:

DUDE. I cannot believe I never thought of this one before!!!!!! My kids have invented a fictional character called Butt Baby who has a butt for a head (there are more TMI details that I’ll leave out), so I think I’ll make them Butt-Babycakes tomorrow for breakfast.

  48. June1 says:

I’m too afraid to introduce these to my almost-four-year-old… He already says enough crazy things to the kids at daycare and random people on the street. 😛

  49. Anna says:

Best. Diagram. In. The. History. Of. Diagrams.

  50. Adam says:

I like the Mickey Mouse and snowman ideas too! Don’t know why I haven’t thought of them before… My contribution is “baby pancakes” which simply involves drizzling the batter in tiny lumps the size of regular Flinstone vitamin. My girls love them!

    • Rachel says:

Omg!! I LOVE eating the little bits of batter that drip when making pancakes. I said one day when I’m bored I’m going to just make a whole batch of them!

  51. Redin NC says:

I’m sure my son would love these! He likes “baby pancakes” too. We have them in all gradations of sizes: infant pancakes, child pancakes, teenager pancakes, etc. The only semi-sophisticated thing I do is Mickey Mouse ears, but blah. Buttcakes sound awesome!

  52. Jodi says:

You managed to incorporate a Venn diagram into your blog post: bar raised! Well played.

  53. Eva says:

I would definitely do this at home. But I’m a little afraid of what will happen the next time preschool serves pancakes… I don’t want my kids insisting on buttcakes THERE… then I get in trouble.

  54. My boys would definitely prefer those over any other shapes! If only you could figure out how to make them fart too…

  55. Donna says:

My boys would want boobcakes to go with the buttcakes.

  56. Corrina says:

I gave my four girls the choice between eggs and buttcakes this morning, and they all got the same smile on their faces and said “Buttcakes!!!” I ended up putting chocolate chips in the middle, and sprinkling shredded coconut for “stuck toilet paper, Mom!” Lol!

  57. tara says:

Hahah this is the best recipe ever!

My dad used to make us pancakes topped with powdered sugar and chocolate syrup. Thinking back on this, I think he must’ve been crazy because holy crap that is a lot of sugar. But man, those were some good pancakes.

Next book idea: Crappy Recipes?! (please?)

  60. smirktastic says:

“Buttcakes are flexible and forgiving.” Like (or unlike) real butts!

  61. Amanda Reed says:

    ROFL! This is hilarious!

  62. And here I thought my amoeba pancakes were cool. Buttcakes are even better!

  63. Angela says:

My kids are in the midst of a squealing, giggly frenzy when I mentioned this to them. I guess we’re having buttcakes tomorrow morning. LOL

  64. Emily says:

I have both a 6yo daughter and a 48yo husband who would love some buttcakes. I’m thinking that Father’s Day will be a perfect occasion!

    • Laura says:

i have the same scenario in my house – thank you for the wonderful father’s day idea!

  65. Jen says:

Whenever I ask my 3 1/2 yr old what he wants to eat he always says “bum bum” cuz he adds “bum bum” to every conversation! Hes always disappointed i didn’t make any. (Hes referring to my butt cuz he always tries to chomp on it) So going to make these this weekend with choc chips…and choc syrup maybe so pee juice to go with it!!

  66. Naomi says:

    OMG! Snort! This is gold!

I especially love the venn diagram. 😀

  67. Angela B. says:

My son will get a huge kick outta this! Sigh…boys!

  68. kylie says:

Amazingly cool Merci for les buttcakes…My girls are going to love them. & perhaps with apple ‘pee’ juice. A crappy cookbook full of smartarse food stories woulf be fabulous.

  69. Monica says:

  70. Laura says:

Brilliant! Kids love silliness and the fact that you give them silliness and make them laugh makes you an exceptional mom! They will remember buttcakes and probably pass it down to future generations. I will be making these for my daughter who loves anything and everything about butts and farts (I admit to uncontrollable giggles on these topics as well.) Thank you for sharing!

  71. Whitney says:

I had a rough day at work yesterday and had seen this post, so I asked him to make me buttcakes for dinner. He did manage to make a few buttcakes, but also made another shape that would be inappropriate to share on public forum. Haha. Men, right? :p

  72. My son is repulsed
    when I butter my crackers.
    He calls them butt-cracks.

  73. Kim says:

Made these this morning – let’s just say it cracked the kids up – thanks for making me look like the coolest mom ever!

  74. This is a breakfast I could even get excited about cooking. But I’ll make it for dinner because when my kids ask “What’s for dinner?” Answering “Buttcakes” will be the apex of awesome.

  75. Elizabeth G says:

Not that your pancake art isn’t inspiring, but have you seen these:
    http://saipancakes.blogspot.com/

I went to college with him, it just astounds me.

  76. Tory says:

At our house, garbanzo beans are “butt beans”. And also, Talosian beans. But then I’d have to explain the Star-Trek-The-Original-Series connection.

  77. Miriam says:

Haha, I love these! It’s great to engage the silly side of kid’s imagination to get them eating 🙂
